    About the role

    Location: ALS Environmental, Calgary

    Reports to: Client Services Manager

    About the Position:

    The successful incumbent will be responsible for all sample login activities at the laboratory. The priority for this position will be to receive and organize samples, verify client information and enter the pertinent information into the laboratory data systems.

    Specific Responsibilities

  • Receive work orders as they arrive in the laboratory;
  • Open and layout samples and paperwork to confirm all required samples have been received;
  • Enter all pertinent information into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS);
  • Determine when client sample processing instructions are missing, incomplete or ambiguous;
  • Maintain close liaison with Laboratory Manager and other lab staff to ensure the smooth delivery of our services to clients;
  • Ensure adherence to all procedures and policies (safety, quality, employment and technical);
  • Transport samples into lab and retrieve from storage, some heavy lifting required (up to 20 kg); assist in fulfilment of bottle orders and other shipping duties as required
  • Initial sample preparation for extraction and analysis, subletting samples;
  • Measure sample mass/volume;
  • Filtration of samples for various tests and analysis. Keeping analysts informed of unusual samples that would affect their instruments;
  • Fill out bench sheets completely and accurately;
  • Operate simple lab equipment such as pipettes, EC, p H meters, centrifuges, etc.
  • Organize workload to meet Turn Around Times (TAT's) and hold times;
  • Identify and resolve internal and external problems when they arise;
  • Training of LG1 and LG2;
  • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Superior keyboarding skills with a minimum of errors;
  • Hands-on experience with computer data entry;
  • Excellent computer skills including MS Word, MS Excel, and LIMS;
  • Strong customer service focus, interpersonal and organizational abilities;
  • Strong communication skills written and verbal;
  • Must be well organized and able to work independently as well as part of a team;
  • Must be capable of working with minimal supervision.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. post-secondary education an asset;
  • Experience in a production based or laboratory environment an asset.
  • Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs (23kg);
  • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
  • Ability to stand for a full shift;
  • Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities;
  • Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required;
  • You may be exposed to unpleasant odours;
  • Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.
