Position Summary:


Toronto Crossing Guards provide a highly visible, advanced level of safety at a variety of locations in a professional, competent and courteous manner.

The primary responsibility of guards is to ensure a safe environment for all people crossing specific intersections or roadways, through proper understanding of traffic laws, and good judgement when creating the opportunities to cross the road.

Crossing Guards are required to comply with all company and client policies, procedures and directives.

Crossing guards must instill a strong sense of safety and security amongst all stakeholders and the travelling public while providing a high level of professionalism and customer service in all interactions.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Providing Crossing Guard Services to the school boards in Toronto, by providing safe movement to schoolage children who are walking through designated school crossing locations
  • Observing traffic and create safe opportunities for schoolage children to cross the intersection/road
  • Supervising children while crossing
  • Observing and recognize all road hazards, use good judgement while interrupting the flow of traffic
  • Spreading salt around sidewalk and cross walk area during winter months to melt ice and improve traction
  • Obey all traffic safety regulations
  • Writing incident/accident reports when necessary
  • Wearing proper uniform and safety equipment during work
  • Act as an ambassador of the client by providing customer service, responding to pedestrians questions by staying knowledgeable about the area
  • Providing assistance for protocol functions, demonstrations and special events.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned by the client contact or ASP
  • Maintain proper punctuality to ensure the safety of all schoolage children and their parents, during designated hours
  • Remain at the designated location for the instructed amount of time

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Must be able to work during the week on a daytime rotation during the normal school year and summer school times
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Be able to act professional and establish proper communication with the public
  • Ability to use good judgement and react appropriately to resolve an emergency/crisis situation in a proper and calm manner
  • Be able to work independently without supervision
  • Be able to stand and/or walk for long periods of time
  • Be able to work in adverse weather conditions including extremes of heat, humidity, cold, rain, snow, sleet, and wind and be capable of working under all types of road conditions
  • Highly developed interpersonal and customer service skills, including conflict resolution, problem solving, decision making, situational assessment and communication skills
  • Possess strong written and verbal skills in English
  • Supply a satisfactory Criminal Reference/Vulnerable Sector Check upon being hire
Successful completion of all required training/certification courses is a pre-requisite for employment; however, can be obtained internally upon hiring;
