JOB PURPOSE

  • The York School seeks a dynamic and ambitious individual to serve as a Debate Coach to support the School's Debate Team. This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals who are passionate about transforming schools through the incredible activity of debate. The Debate Coach will report directly to the Head Debate Coach and will have the ability to act professionally when communicating with staff, students and parents on a regular basis. They will help develop The York School's debate program, teach and motivate both novice and experienced debaters, and represent The York School at debate and public speaking competitions.


This position is a casual position, attending weekly practices and attending upwards of 6 evening and weekend tournaments throughout the year.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES- Lead debate seminars and judge rounds in both our Middle and Senior Schools (grades 6-12) as part of the regular debate team programming Prepare teams for tournaments by scheduling practices, case construction meetings, and running rounds outside of our regular program time Administrative tasks associated with tournaments, such as supporting the Head Coach with draws and tabs Provide debaters with feedback related to their practice and skills in debate Give advice and support to students while they're at competitions Represent the school as a judge at tournaments, including on weekends.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS- Debate experience at the High School and/or University level required Experienced debater in both the British Parliamentary and CP/CNDF styles Completion of a University Degree or enrollment in post-secondary education is an asset- years experience coaching debate or at a high level participating in debate is considered an asset Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in various written forms Ability to act professionally and to effectively communicate and interact with staff, constituents and various other professionals Display a high level of initiative, effort and commitment towards completing assignments efficiently, work with mínimal supervision, and demonstrate responsible behaviour and attention to detail Work well in team situations to promote trust, cooperation, commitment and team spirit
