Community Development Worker - Harm Reduction Support Worker

1 Regular - Full Time

1 Full Time - 13 Month Contract

Health Services - Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention


The Harm Reduction team within the Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention Division requires a self-directed, enthusiastic individual to work within a collaborative team environment of Harm Reduction Community Development Workers to provide outreach and harm reduction services to residents and build community capacity.


Responsibilities:


  • Deliver harm reduction services including education, support, referrals and equipment including safer injection supplies, safer inhalation supplies, safer piercing supplies, overdose prevention and response training and naloxone distribution through the Peel Works Needle Exchange Program (NEP) mobile van service on both day and evening shifts
  • Build and support partnerships with community organizations to provide optimal harm reduction services throughout the Region of Peel
  • Mobilize the community to respond to their health issues by acting as a best practice advisor and supporter
  • Target and access 'hard to reach' communities and vulnerable individuals and populations through outreach in the community
  • Travel to various locations across the Region of Peel to serve clients, via the Peel Works NEP mobile vans
  • Work collaboratively with all team members to stock and organize the vans with equipment and supplies to meet the needs of clients in the community
  • Provide education and information to community groups on harm reduction, overdose prevention and response, naloxone administration and on stigma related to substance use

Qualifications:


  • Postsecondary education in a health or social services field, with a strong emphasis on community outreach and engagement
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered
  • Knowledge of the principles and best practices of harm reduction as it relates to substance use
  • Minimum oneyear experience working as a harm reduction support worker/community development worker (or similar) with recent experience in Public Health preferred
  • Experience working with diverse groups including people who use drugs
  • Knowledge of Peel's diverse population and an awareness of trends and issues which impact health
  • Strong assessment and organizational skills
  • Certification or experience with nonviolent crisis intervention techniques
  • Effective oral communication skills
  • Strong computer skills including MS Outlook, Word, Excel, NEO database
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to drive the Peel Works NEP mobile vans to serve clients throughout the Region of Peel
  • Valid CPR certification

Location:
You will be working in the Community and reporting into 7120 Hurontario Street, Mississauga.


Hours of Work

Both contract full time and full time:Monday - Friday with potential for occasional Saturdays (Days and evening availability required) 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM, 3:30 PM - 11:30 PM. 35 Hours per week
