Either way -
we are looking for people across all our rich diversity to perform field and laboratory quality assurance testing on soil, aggregates, asphalt and cement concrete products for City of Edmonton construction projects.

With a focus on the City of Edmonton's Cultural Commitments to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:

  • Sample and test asphalt, soils, concrete, gravel and other related materials according to appropriate ASTM, AASHTO, CSA or other standards
  • Perform inspections of asphalt and concrete plants that are producing materials for use on City of Edmonton construction projects
  • Perform field coring on asphalt mixes for thickness and compaction determination
  • Complete preventative maintenance on lab and field equipment and ensure all equipment is properly maintained to ensure it is in good and safe working order
  • Operate field and laboratory test equipment
  • Record test results and prepare standard test reports
  • Perform all duties in accordance with provincial and municipal Occupational Health & Safety regulations
  • Conduct work in a manner that complies with the requirements set out in the City's Environmental Management System (EMS)
  • Other related duties as required

Qualifications:


  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent or higher, supplemented by some courses in Civil or Materials Technology from a recognized technical institute
  • Knowledge of construction materials testing laboratory equipment and procedures
  • Ability to understand and execute complex verbal and written instructions
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain professional relationships within a diverse context of colleagues and clients
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations and record data with a high level of accuracy
  • Ability to make decisions and perform work independently as well as with a team in a field environment
  • Ability to perform the assigned tasks, such as repetitive bending and lifting up to 50 lbs (equipment, samples, etc), in various weather, environmental, traffic and construction conditions
  • Basic computer skills, including ability to use Google Workspace
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring is a requirement for this position
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position

_ Up to 46 temporary full-time positions for up to 11 months_

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, dependent on weather conditions. Must be able to work nights, evenings, weekends and holidays as required.

The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time.

Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
