POSITION:
Contract Part Time Food Service Worker (Unionized)

(Contract starts April 1, 2024 ending April 1, 2025)




REPORTS TO:
Program Manager or Designate





HOURS OF WORK:
8 hours per week (position will work on a rotational basis)


WORK DAYS/


HOURS:
Every other Saturday and Sunday (2pm-6pm or 1pm-6pm)

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:


The
Food Service Worker works within a collaborative team to provide meaningful and relevant services within a theoretical feminist framework; that includes a working knowledge of the dynamics and effects of violence, trauma and oppression.

The Food Service Worker is responsible for the planning and preparation of nutritionally balanced and culturally appropriate meals for (resident) women and their children at any given time.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


1. Resident Support

  • Meets with residents at intake or shortly afterwards and:
  • introduces herself and clarifies her role
- provides residents with an orientation of the kitchen, kitchen equipment and the cleaning materials used in the kitchen
- obtains information about their dietary /cultural food needs as well as any pertinent health information such as food allergies
- supports residents to set goals related to their food needs.
- actively participates in staff meetings/case management and acts as an advocate on behalf of residents

  • Ensures that the nutritional /food needs of the residents are met consistent with the Canada Food Guide
  • Facilitates meetings /workshops related to food, nutrition, cooking on a limited budget
  • Prepares and posts the Shelter's menu once weekly
  • Posts all food recalls

2. Meal Preparation

  • Prepares lunch and dinner meals
  • Prepares a weekend evening meal or collaborates with residents and makes available requested items for the meals
  • Ensures that foods for breakfast, lunches and dinner are stocked and available to the residents
  • Unpacks and stores food and kitchen supplies; some heavy lifting is required i.e. boxes
  • Ensures the kitchen is managed in accordance with current Public Health and Safety Standards
  • Prepares and/or assists women in the preparation of "special occasion" meals, including dining room setup

3. Cleaning

  • Washes dishes, pots, pans and other equipment used to prepare lunch and dinner meals
  • Cleans kitchen floor after meal preparation
  • Completely cleans kitchen at least once weekly, including all appliances
  • Maintains all kitchen appliances; sterilizer, freezer, cooler, stove, etc.
  • Cleans cupboards and pantry shelves as required
  • Cleans and maintains the cleanliness of the food storage spaces, including the fridges and freezers

4. Food and Supply Coordination

  • Orders food according to the budget and menu plans
  • Places the food bank orders and maintains accurate records
  • Coordinates the unpacking of food orders, stocking of kitchen and pantries
  • Ensures the cleaning of the kitchen, pantry and storage areas according to the Department of Health standards
  • Supervises and facilitates the food bank program
  • Works cooperatively with the Facility and Maintenance Coordinator to ensure access to the food bank for exresidents
  • Conducts training with the frontline staff team as needed and volunteers regarding the food bank program
  • Maintains statistical record of users

5. Violence Against Women Counselling

  • Recognizes and deescalates conflicts on any issues relating to residents
  • Informs front line staff of any issues relating to residents
  • Demonstrates and maintains knowledge of relevant issues

6. Group Work

  • Provides input for weekly resident meetings to determine emerging needs and encourages a cooperative living environment
  • Provides relevant information that supports the development, implementation and evaluation of psychoeducational and mutualaid groups that address residents' various issues as well as trauma and woman abuse issues
  • Contributes specialized knowledge and expertise to team members to develop meaningful and relevant services for women and children
  • Works cooperatively with all members of the staff team
  • Actively participates in creating a collaborative and dynamic team environment

7. Administration

  • Adheres to all policies and procedures of Homeward Family Shelter
  • Completes administrative duties as outlined in Homeward Family Shelter policies and procedures manuals and specific to your job description
  • Maintains, records and compiles program statistics and prepares reports and correspondence as required
  • Participates in ongoing program evaluation
  • Ensures that residents are aware of and understand house practices and procedures as it relates to meals, use of kitchen space and equipment
  • Ensures that the Health and Safety Guidelines are followed as per Homeward Family Shelter and the Public Health
