This is a term, anticipatory permanent competition - the vacancy is currently for one year but may become permanent through the business planning process. If a permanent position becomes available within the 12-month eligibility list, this eligibility list will be used ahead of a posted second competition. This competition may also be used to staff similar vacancies.

Your role:


The Water and Climate Data Scientist strengthens the resiliency of the Yukon government's flood forecasting and monitoring program through the development of data-driven products to support flood forecasting and modelling.

The incumbent also ensures effective management, access, interpretation and communication of water and climate data to support flood forecasting and climate change analyses.

Selection for further consideration is based solely on the information you provide in your resume. You will be asked to complete a questionnaire to assist the screening panel in their assessment.

  • Degree in environmental or water resources engineering, environmental sciences, geography or other physical sciences with a specialization or significant experience in data science, or a degree in data science.
  • Experience working with a variety of programming languages such as R, Python or equivalent for data discovery, analytics and/or modelling of environmental data.
  • Experience conducting data processing, management, quality assurance and quality control of spatial, discrete and continuous environmental datasets.
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting environmental data to answer research questions and disseminating the results in various formats.
  • Knowledge and experience in meteorological, hydrology, water quality and groundwater science and methods of data collection, management, analysis, and interpretation.

  • Programming skills for the management and analysis of environmental data
  • Knowledge of hydrometeorological data collection and analysis techniques
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively and build partnerships with a broad range of internal and external partners
  • Ability to set goals and priorities, and strong organizational and time management skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Creative and strategic thinking and problemsolving ability

Additional Information

Conditions of Employment:
Valid Class 5 driver's licence (or equivalent)


Job Requirements:
Ability to be on call on select weekends May-September to support flood forecasting.

Field work in all weather conditions and remote areas, lifting of heavy objects, travel via ATV, boat, snowmobiles, helicopters, and small planes.
