Role Title

Chief Investment Officer

Purpose of role

The Chief Investment Officer is responsible for Foresters Financials' investment function.

Foresters Financials' general account portfolio is a key driver of the Company's performance and the organization has been enhancing its investment function with the objective of improving the portfolio's risk-adjusted returns.

This role will set overall investment strategy, policy and direct portfolio management.


Job Description:

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead investment strategy and policy for Foresters Financial U.S and Canadian $6 billion + general account and surplus investments
  • Set the targets on annual basis for performance, risks and asset allocation for the portfolio.
  • Accountable for Foresters' investment managers, evaluating and reporting on investment performance and service while managing the overall relationships.
  • Provide oversight on investment strategy for Foresters U.K. business
  • Lead Foresters ESG (environmental, social and governance) investments framework
  • Lead the implementation, monitoring, review and periodic updating of the general account's strategic asset allocation, including manager searches.
  • Monitor financial market developments, providing commentary and insight, with particular focus on impact on the general account's liquidity and credit quality.
  • Provide support to all business areas on investmentrelated matters.
  • Work closely with the Board of Directors, particularly the Risk and Investment Committee, including preparation of reports and presentations.
  • Member of the Management Pension Committee which oversees Foresters' pension assets.
  • Special projects as needed.
Key Qualifications

  • Education: Undergraduate degree required, MBA or other advanced degree or equivalent work experience preferred.
  • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation or progress toward attaining the CFA designation preferred.
  • The job requires an individual who is highly organized
  • High degree of analytical expertise
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with teams of different technical knowledge and expertise, and an individual who takes Initiative and is able to build solid relationships with other departments across Foresters
  • Extensive knowledge of portfolio management processes and asset allocation
  • Strong knowledge of insurance and investment products
  • Proven ability to evaluate the performance of investment managers, ideally including experience conducting manager searches
  • Knowledge of Canadian and U.S. financial markets
  • Highly organized with a high degree of analytical expertise
  • Strong verbal, written, presentation and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with those of difference technical knowledge and expertise
  • Ability to work with and build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Desire to work for a purposedriven organization.
