Description:


The Senior High Teacher is responsible for teaching and providing support to students within the South Shore Regional Centre for Education.

The Teacher will work within the Inclusive Education Policy framework by participating in individualized program planning with school staff and families to maximize learning experiences for students.

Discovering Opportunities 9 is a cross-curricular based program that works to re-engage students with school.

It has a strong team teaching component and allows for increased planning and communication time between teachers and in order to re-engage and support students.


Qualifications & Experience:

Valid Nova Scotia Teacher Certification

Bachelor of Education - Secondary

University education in English Language Arts

University education in Social Studies

OR a minimum of three (3) years of experience teaching a minimum of 50% Social Studies within the last seven (7) years with positive performance appraisals and/or references

OR a minimum of three (3) years of experience teaching a minimum of 50% English Language Arts within the last seven (7) years with positive performance appraisals and/or references

Desired Qualifications and Experience

Professional development in English Language Arts

Experience teaching English Language Arts

Professional development in Social Studies

Experience teaching Social Studies

Experience teaching grades 9-12

Excellent communication (written and oral and electronic), problem solving and interpersonal skills;
Ability to collaborate with school and inter-agency teams to support early intervention strategies, coordination of services, problem solving and program planning;
Proven ability to work as a contributing member of school program planning and multidisciplinary teams;
Current knowledge of developmental trauma, the impact on learning, communication and social engagement throughout the lifespan;
An interest and willingness to engage in continuing education and professional development;
Ability to employ non-violent crisis intervention techniques;
Ability to demonstrate teaching strategies and coach school staff as needed;
Ability to maintain and promote confidentiality as the norm;
Experience in planning and developing training and professional learning opportunities related to students with behaviours of concern;
Proven ability to communicate and work alongside diverse cultural and racial backgrounds.

Demonstrated ability to value the voice and contribution of others while remaining open to corrective criticism.

Completion of WHMIS and First Aid, or willingness to obtain upon hire.
