Position Overview:

The Financial Controller will spearhead the financial management of the Association, aligning with Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and the approved policies and procedures set by the Association's Board of Directors.


Location:
Hybrid (flexible) working arrangement - office location/home
Office location, Peter Gilgan Family YMCA, 410 Rebecca Street, Oakville, Ontario.


Work Schedule:
Full time, 35 hours per week

Responsibilities:

Finance/Reporting

  • Manages the daytoday operations of the Finance department, including the coordination of tasks with the Finance team (3 staff)
  • Oversees and reviews the preparation of all accounting entries, reconciliations and monthend/yearend closing activities
  • Ensures that grants and government funding are reconciled and recognized appropriately in the financial statements (e.g. child care wage subsidies, grants related to health & fitness)
  • Responsible for accurate and timely presentation and interpretation of financial statements, internally and to the Finance Committee/Board of Directors
  • Provides monthly expense analysis, variance analysis and other adhoc reporting, as required
Audit

  • Maintains detailed and relevant audit working papers and serves as the main point of contact with the external auditors
  • Coordinates audit related tasks with the Finance team and other departments, as needed
Budgeting/Forecasting

  • Assists the VP, Finance, IT & Business Systems with the annual budget and periodic forecasting needs (including cash flow forecasting)
Compliance

  • Ensures tax returns are filed on time (e.g. HST, EHT etc.)
  • Prepares the annual T3010 Charity Information Return
  • Ensures compliance with applicable laws, regulations, internal policies and procedures, and control protocols and takes corrective action when required
  • Assists the VP Finance, IT & Business Systems in the development of all financial policies and procedures
Team Leadership and Cross Departmental Support

  • Provides leadership and guidance to the Finance team
  • Builds relationships at all levels within the organization and communicates financial matters in a clear and concise manner
  • Supports department managers and supervisors with their financial queries, financial analysis needs and budget/forecast preparation
  • Provides input to the VP, Finance, IT & Business systems regarding Finance staff performance evaluations
Process Improvement

  • Seeks new financial processes or solutions for greater efficiency and accountability
Collaborates with all departments and the senior leadership team to continually enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of financial processes, contributing to the overall success of the organization

Essential Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance or accounting
  • CPA designation
  • Over 3 years of work experience as a Financial Controller or equivalent seniorlevel accounting position
  • Experience with a recognized accounting software package
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • High level of sound and independent judgment, reasoning and discretion
  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy while meeting deadlines; time management skills, multitasking skills, and the ability to prioritize tasks with mínimal supervision
  • Builds relationships at all levels within the organization and communicates financial matters clearly
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team and demonstrate a highlevel ability for taking initiative and problem solving
  • Proven experience of handling confidential data
  • Current satisfactory Criminal Record Check vulnerable sector

Desirable Skills:


  • Experience with SGA (Stock, Garber & Associates) or Unison accounting software
  • Experience with notforprofit accounting standards
  • Forecasting and budgeting experience
  • Knowledge of the Canada Wide Early Learning Child Care system (CWELCC)
