SCOPE

Reporting to the Manager, Core Technologies, the incumbent is responsible for the management and maintenance of servers and any other central IT systems in the Gina-Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science (GCS).


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In relation to the Linux and Network Appliance operating systems, responsible for installation, maintenance, upgrade and security of systems; develops and maintains software for the administration and configuration of systems and other management tasks. Deploy computer images to physical or virtual servers. Assist with capacity planning. Under general supervision, develop, test, debug, or modify new and existing software and databases.
  • Work with technical staff to understand problems with hardware or software and resolve them.
  • Implement appropriate security to ensure network and system integrity. Review operating system security and bug reports to determine patches that need to be applied.
  • Provide training and troubleshooting assistance to AITS staff and clients that require core GCS IT services.
  • Document procedures for the administration and maintenance of server infrastructure and software.
  • Undertake other tasks as required in support of the unit.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline with two to four years of relevant work experience.
  • Knowledge of and experience of system administration on large scale installation of server and workstations running under Linux (or any other UNIX operating system).
  • Knowledge and experience with NetApp appliances or other data storage systems
  • Knowledge of basic services such as: mail, web, DNS, directory services using LDAP and Kerberos, file sharing protocols.
  • Knowledge of shell and other scripting languages (perl, python...).
  • Good knowledge (level 4) of spoken and written English and basic spoken French (level 3). Written French is an asset.
  • Very good technical writing, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Very good analytical and problemsolving skills.
  • Ability to work outside normal working hours when required.
  • Ability to work under pressure while maintaining harmonious relations with coworkers.
  • Experience working in a university environment is an asset.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Windows and Apple operating systems is an asset.
