The Position:
As a staff member in the Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSAM) Area, the Chemistry Lab Instructor will teach lab sections in introductory courses, support other faculty teaching chemistry labs, order supplies needed in our area, maintain laboratory equipment, train students and faculty on equipment use, support faculty in the development of new lab exercises, and ensure laboratory safety protocols are followed.
In partnership with the Biology Lab Instructor, the Chemistry Lab Instructor will assist in the delivery of an excellent laboratory education to students taking courses in the natural sciences.
Responsibilities:
- Teach eight lab sections per year (typically at the 100 and 200level); this includes preparing solutions, setting up labs, cleaning up, and assessing student lab assignments.
- Support other faculty teaching chemistry labs by helping prepare, set up, and clean up labs.
- Maintain tidy lab spaces.
- Develop and ensure compliance with lab safety protocols.
- Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment (e.g. spectrometers, pipettes, pH meters, etc.) and train faculty and students in their proper use.
- Monitor inventory, and order equipment, supplies and chemicals needed in labs and to support faculty research (done in partnership with the biology lab instructor).
- Input, maintain, and verify information in a variety of databases and spreadsheets.
- Commit to developing skill sets and abilities to enhance student's lab experience, and support faculty in the development of new lab exercises that help meet program learning outcomes.
- Participate in key administrative tasks (e.g. program meetings, academic program reviews, program development, budget development).
Preferred Skills and Attributes:
- Teaching experience (especially labbased) or a willingness to become an effective lab instructor.
- Familiarity with lab spaces, protocols, and a variety of common laboratory equipment, and a willingness to learn new skills.
- Ability to work independently, be highly organized, solve problems, and be able to manage multiple tasks/deadlines.
- Ability to work well with faculty and students.
- Ability to communicate well and to contribute to a healthy workplace culture and maintain a safe working environment.
Education, Training & Certifications:
- MSc degree in chemistry or a related discipline
