Position Overview:

  • Reporting to the Director of Parks and Cemeteries, the Manager of Parks Operations is responsible for the operations and daytoday maintenance of the City's Horticulture, Turf, Sports Field, Parks Infrastructure & Amenities, and Downtown teams. We are seeking a dynamic leader, who can lead a team of specialists while developing maintenance programs, and participating in parks planning projects.

Responsibilities:


  • Directly supervise full time, and seasonal staff providing mentorship, direction and guidance
  • Ensure that City parkland inventory is maintained in accordance with the standards established by the City
  • Manages the City's horticultural program, Sportsfields' maintenance program and the Parks Infrastructure and Amenities
  • Manages the City's Downtown team involving major streetscape maintenance, Carl Zehr Square and a broad range of citywide event supports and seasonal displays
  • Plans and develops objectives and determines goals for the section, including administrative, technical, operational, and financial components.
  • Determines staffing requirements in accordance with section and seasonal workload and makes recommendations to the Director
    to ensure resources match workload.
  • Acts as the primary office of interest, or the steward, with respect to all parks and open space related issues and is profiled in that manner with Council, the public, and other communities
  • Develops, recommends, and administers annual budgets
  • Oversees project management and manages complex, multidisciplinary and multistakeholder project teams related to parks, trails, open space development and environmental land management initiatives through development, design and construction phases
  • Oversees the provision of emergency service (e.g., winter storm clean up) provides direction and allocation of resources. Ensures, through protocol and communication, that legislated requirements are met
  • Contacts various Ministry staff (Grand River Conservation Authority, Ministry of Natural Resources, Ministry of the Environment, Ministry of Labour) for consultation regarding legislated work requirements, as well as to receive information regarding changes in legislation and standards
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • 4-years Honours degree in Landscape Architecture or a related field.
  • 47 years of related experience including an onthejob period of adjustment.
  • Ability to represent the City and the Division at various external meetings and media opportunities
  • Ability to read and interpret legislation, technical journals, manuals, work orders, design drawings, bylaws, correspondence, reports, and supplier information
  • Leadership skills in order to effectively manage staff and projects to successful outcomes
  • Valid MTO DZ/G class driver's license in good standing.
  • Must provide Drivers Abstract at your own expense as a condition of employment.
