- Contract
- Make and serve coffee, tea, and espresso based beverages (both hot and cold);
- Prepare and serve food items;
- Handle and serve food and drink items in accordance with company standards, Quebec food safety regulations, and government COVID-19 regulations;
- Memorize drink recipes and food preparation methods;
- Maintain a clean, sanitized, and safe work station by washing dishes, and cleaning surfaces such as counters, floors, and equipment
- Maintain regular upkeep of the seating area by performing tasks such as cleaning tables, sweeping and mopping floors, servicing garbage disposal units, and restocking coffee counter;
- Keep equipment operating by following operating instructions and maintaining supplies;
- Conducting inventory checks and restocking;
- Manage freshness standards regarding all consumable products while also controlling waste;
- Handle cash and card transactions through a point-of-sale system, reconciling cash and register records at end of shi;
- Provide enthusiastic and engaging customer service;
- Educate guests by presenting and explaining beverage and food menus;
- Represent the The Students' Society brand with passion, confidence, and a positive attitude.
- Ability to work calmly and professionally in a high-pressure work environment from both an operational and political perspective;
- Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience as a barista;
- Experience using an espresso machine and steaming milk;
- Experience handling cash and card transactions, experience with point-of-sale systems;
- Good knowledge of the McGill community and the Student's Society, an asset;
- Hygiene and food safety certificate from MAPAQ,an asset;
- Service in Action training, an asset;
- Workplace first aid certificate: CPR AED Level C, or any other first aid/CPR AED certificate, an asset;
- A fitness level that allows for heavy lifting, moving up and downstairs, and standing for long periods of time;
- Knowledge of and passion for coffee;
- Friendly, outgoing, and dedicated to excellent customer service;
- Great interpersonal, communication and customer-service skills;
- Highly professional attitude and work ethic;
- Proven team player;
- Ability to work within the Vision, Values and environment of The Students' Society;
- Commitment to adhere to COVID-19 regulations and ability to adapt to new protocols as those regulations change.

Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
Baristas will be responsible for making and serving beverages, such as coffee and tea, and foods, such as sandwiches, muffins, or cookies. Baristas will also be responsible for handling transactions, cleaning and maintaining the store, and counting and restocking inventory. As the main point of contact between Gerts Cafe and its patrons Baristas will work in collaboration with the rest of the team to maintain top standards of customer service and patron satisfaction. Other areas of focus include kitchen support and event support wherever necessary. Baristas also assist in the promotion of events held and/or hosted by the SSMU.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The function of the Barista role covers a wide variety of responsibilities in the daily operations of SSMU facilities, and may be modified from time to time by management. It is important to note that not all functions and duties are contained within this definition, and that the position itself should be ever-changing and adaptive. Nevertheless, specific roles, responsibilities, and essential job functions allocated to this position include, but are not limited to the following:
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS:
To undertake other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Bar Manager and/or Supervisor(s) from time to time.
SUPERVISION REQUIRED:
Baristas receive general direction from the Bar Manager and/or Supervisor(s). A certain degree of initiative and self-direction is expected in day-to-day operations.
