The Investment Funds Institute of Canada (IFIC) is the voice of Canada's investment funds industry.

IFIC brings together approximately 150 organizations, including fund managers, dealers, and service providers, to strengthen the integrity of the investment funds industry and foster public confidence in investment funds, helping Canadian investors to achieve good outcomes.

IFIC contributes significantly to the success and sustainability of the entire wealth management industry, a sector that manages approximately $2.2 trillion in assets and provides leading retail investment solutions for Canadians.


Reporting to the Vice-President, Policy & General Counsel, the Associate Policy Advisor, at IFIC is responsible for mutual/ETF fund management and distribution regulatory issue analysis and related research, committee support, and other IFIC policy support.

The position requires an individual who can proactively advance fund-industry and investor positive policy matters, while helping to avoid or mitigate negative impacts on the mutual/ETF funds industry and its investors.


The role would fit a forward-thinking individual with excellent writing skills, and the ability to review legal and regulatory issues, prepare effective briefing notes, as well as the ability to reflect member policy and operating issues, and related research, into clear and compelling submissions to regulators.


This opportunity offers an exciting opportunity to work with leading participants, managers, dealers, regulators and government officials in the mutual/ETF funds industry on a wide range of stimulating and challenging policy and regulatory issues.


  • Reviewing, analyzing and summarizing proposed or current legislation, policies, economic statements, and budgets
  • Monitoring relevant securities law and mutual/ETF fund manager/distributor business developments in Canada and abroad
  • Helping to analyze policy alternatives and strategies to support achieving industry objectives
  • Helping to build industry consensus, develop IFIC policy positions, and prepare clear and compelling IFIC position papers and responses to regulatory proposals
  • Conducting or assisting in undertaking research to help assess policy alternatives and advance positions
  • Providing advice and assistance to IFIC staff, including on IFIC conferences and webinars
  • Engaging in ongoing discussion with regulators, IFIC members, other industry associations, and stakeholders to achieve objectives
  • Helping to support IFIC's Board, steering committees and working groups, as required
Skills/Qualifications

  • LL.B./J.D. (license to practice law in Ontario or another Canadian jurisdiction, or a university degree in business, public policy or other related discipline
  • 5+ years of experience in the financial services industry
  • Sound familiarity with securities regulatory framework and securities law, corporate, taxation and other regulatory issues relating to mutual/ETF funds specifically or financial products generally
  • Knowledge of fund industry and its investor matters, as well as the financial sector generally
  • Ability to communicate highly effectively, both in writing (policies, briefs, reports) and orally (presentations)
  • Understanding of public policy development process
  • Excellent analytical, planning, organizational, and execution abilities
  • Personable with strong relationshipbuilding capabilities
  • Experience in crossfunctional initiatives and collaborating with multiple levels within organizations
  • Ability to see the big picture, while managing details
  • Sound judgment
  • Excellent team player
  • Ability to work with mínimal supervision
  • Knowledge of French is an asset

Work Environment

  • This role is based in Toronto and has limited travel. The office currently operates in a hybrid environment with the expectation of at least 2 days per week in IFIC's downtown Toronto offices.
