About Us:


As part of the Student Experience portfolio, the Accessible Education team offers resources and supports to students with disabilities at Western.

Team members work one-on-one with students to review documentation, understand needs, and recommend academic accommodations that help ensure equity, inclusion, and access to education.


Responsibilities:


The purpose of the Counsellor role is to determine, coordinate, and in some cases directly provide, appropriate academic accommodation and related services for students with disabilities.

This support allows students a fair opportunity to engage in their studies as effectively and independently as possible while maintaining academic integrity of Western's courses and programs.

By providing accommodation and skill development services for students, the Counsellor role assists the University in supporting diversity and complying with human rights legislation concerning accommodation and accessibility.

The Counsellor also plays a central role in implementing Senate policies.


Qualifications:


  • Education:
  • Master's degree in Counselling, Social Work, Psychology, Special Education, Occupational Therapy, Disabilities Studies, or a related Behavioural Sciences discipline
  • Experience:
  • Three (3) years' experience working with young adults with a broad range of disabilities using a case management approach
  • Experience arranging academic accommodation for students with disabilities at an Ontario university, with particular expertise in working with students with mental health/psychiatric disabilities, learning disabilities, ADHD, among others is preferred
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Ability to use knowledge of counselling skills, empathy, problem solving, and various intervention strategies
  • Expertise in working with persons with disabilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to deliver information professionally in difficult circumstances
  • Professional manner, tact, diplomacy and discretion in interactions with students and colleagues
  • Ability to work with people who have a wide variety of life and school experiences
  • Knowledge of approaches and techniques for supporting students with disabilities and the ability to liaise with faculty, university departments, staff, and various professionals and community groups
  • Knowledge and awareness of assistive technology and services
  • Ability to work well under pressure and handle multiple conflicting priorities in a fast

- paced environment
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail when managing individual cases and preparing information for reports and documentation
