Duties:

This position comprises the duties of instruction support, community liaison, facility coordinator, financial record keeping and sales.

Instructional support for all program activities:

  • Maintain tool and equipment. Keep equipment in working order for department use.
  • Sustain a safe learning environment. Implement safety standards, rules and inspections. Provide safety inspections of all tools.
  • Demonstrate and supervise tool and equipment use.
  • Assist instruction team with delivery of program curriculum activities.
  • Supervise and guide student activities. Provide input regarding student behavior.
  • Act as primary designated site first aid person.
  • Interact with faculty regarding classroom and lab materials. Plan and purchase program supplies and tools. Locate, price, order and ensure the delivery of supplies and equipment. Make sure that supplies are well stocked and available for student and faculty use.
  • Support field trips. Work may include collecting fees, making travel arrangements, and participate in bus driving as needed.
  • Participate in department meetings and institutional committee meeting.
Community liaison

  • Provide phone and in person reception while role modeling a professional demeanor to students and the public.
  • Coordinate the use of program facilities by outside user groups.
  • Participate in student recruitment by welcoming program applicants, sharing information and directing applicants to the program chair.
  • Work with faculty to support program marketing, facility tours and VIU promotional events as part of student recruitment.
  • Assist faculty and students with establishing and maintaining industry relationships to support student employment.
  • Support G.R. Paine Center events such meetings, workshops and celebrations.
  • Participate in professional activities in keeping with their disciplines.
Facility coordinator

  • Monitor the greenhouse environment. Problem solve system alerts and coordinate repairs as required.
  • Implement growing pest control programs in collaboration with the faculty and students.
  • Coordinate the maintenance of all program equipment, growing facilities and G.R. Paine Center landscape.
  • Communicate with Facility Services to maintain the G.R. Paine Centre such as janitorial needs, plumbing, electrical, and heating issues.
  • Organize waste and recycling pickup.
  • Order drinking water and irrigation water as required.
  • Coordinate with Health and Safety to report safety and security incidents.
  • Monitor security issues including the handling of keys, electronic and gates locking controls.
Financial Record Keeping and Sales

  • Manage the sales of crops and products produced by students. Includes handling payments, daily cash out procedures, record keeping, and remitting funds. Supervise student participation with marketing and plant sales as part of learning experiences.
  • Establish and maintain accurate filing systems.
  • Handle payments and reconciliations. Use institution financial record system to administer purchases.

Required Qualifications:

Red Seal Horticulturalist or Diploma in Horticulture. Minimum five years related work experience. An equivalent combination of education and/or horticulture experience may be considered.

  • Provincial Pesticide applicators license.
  • First aid certification, Level One.
  • Experience in landscape maintenance and installation.
  • Experience in managing a greenhouse.
  • Trained in the use of common landscape tools, equipment and machinery.
  • Work experience in horticulture, preferably in a supervisory role.
  • Must possess a valid BC Driver's Licence and have a confirmed driving record.
  • Must be physically fit, as work requires moderate physical effort and exertion, with infrequent intermittent periods of heavy activity

Preferred Qualifications:

Class 4 driver's license
