    Job Description

    The Research Technician I, under general supervision, is to perform semi-skilled, technical support for research work involving performance of assignments requiring modification and adaptation to routine procedures. This position will assistant with in the development of an annual plan of work for activities related to animal care and farm maintenance/

    management. Work is performed under general supervision with evaluation based on the successful completion of tasks assigned.

    This position may pay more than the minimum proposed salary listed above, depending on experience and/or qualifications of the selected candidate.

    Responsibilities:
    • Performs general animal welfare activities such as feeding, watering, grooming and exercising of animals and collecting all the data from this project that includes ruminal fluid, digestibility, and degradability data; Implements and maintains data collection and summarization of feed trials; Assists senior staff members in conducting major feedlot experiments and consults in developing procedures; Assists the researchers in experiments and/or field trials in areas such as crop bio-technology, genomics, animal re-production and artificial technologies; Records and maintains pesticide applications records.
    • Assists and supports the veterinarian and research staff with medical, routine animal health procedures and research; Performs daily evaluations of research animals and conducts routine animal health surveillance; Makes and records observation, scientific measurements for plant and animal related activities; Makes and records weights and measurement of animal species that ensure the institutional program for animal care and use is functional; Conducts daily animal health and welfare assessments and maintain the welfare of the animals in the relevant animal species area primarily assigned; Assists in the training of animals to ensure there is appropriate socialization and desensitization for human interaction; Ensures daily animal inspection information is collected correctly and submitted for entry into farm management program; Assists in maximizing the productivity of the breeding herd by making quality animal husbandry activities for applicable animal species (i.e. Poultry, Cattle, and Goats) and meeting those targets.
    • Performs work assignments utilizing skills such as mechanical, carpentry and welding; Assists with the preparation, loading and transporting of animals to off-site events and other transport needs as necessary; Performs general and routine cleanliness, maintenance and minor repairs on the farm fields and farm buildings such as lawncare, fences, gates, feeders, pens, etc. and work with supervisor(s) to ensure work orders are processed and fulfilled for external services needed. Conduct routine maintenance checks; Performs general maintenance of all farm and landscape equipment and work with supervisor(s) to ensure work orders are processed and fulfilled for external services needed; Assembles and operates laboratory and technical equipment while research is being conducted; setup equipment and materials prior to the research being performed; Confers with managers to determine production requirements, conditions of equipment and supplies work schedules; Operates heavy and light equipment including but not limited to tractors, trucks, pickups, skid steers, post hole auger, loaders, and other equipment as needed; Maintains inventory and organization of Animal and Farm Facility supplies and order as required.
    • Participates and assists in college-wide events, activities, committees and performs other duties inclusive as deemed necessary.
    Required Education and Experience:
    • High school diploma.
    • Two years of related experience.
    Required, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
    • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Animal Science, Biology or a related life sciences discipline.
    • Two years work related experience in a research laboratory.
    • Ability to work independently while adhering to established plans, programs and protocols.
    • Knowledge of the scientific method of investigation and proper note-keeping is preferred.
    • Ability to manage a research laboratory and coordinate the activities of student research assistants
    • Good written and verbal communication skills, and computer literacy.
    Other Requirements:
    • Ability to lift moderately heavy objects.
    • Ability to exert heavy force.
    • Work beyond normal business hours and/or work on weekends.
