    If you are an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual who demonstrates initiative and wants to work for a forward- thinking, creative employer, this opportunity is for you The Fire Department with the City of Chilliwack, a growing and vibrant community of 100,000 located 100 kilometers east of Vancouver, is seeking a dynamic individual to fill the position of Public Educator/Fire Inspector.

    The incumbent in this class will be required to deliver programs designed to raise the awareness of the public on a number of matters of importance to the operation of the Fire Department, including fire prevention, fire risks and hazards, life safety issues, risk management, property insurance, workplace hazards and paid-on-call firefighter activities.

    The incumbent will prepare and present courses and public presentations on fire prevention and emergency management topics and other related topics as assigned.

    The incumbent will assist with the preparation of copy and graphics for public relations programs related to Fire Department activities for brochures, flyers, print-media, radio, video and multi-media.

    The incumbent will, as assigned, prepare and issue press releases, act as a spokesperson for the Fire Department, attend meetings, events and displays as a representative of the Fire Department and maintain records and statistics on the Department's performance in these activities.

    The incumbent will assist with electrical fire safety, grow-op, health and safety and building life safety upgrade initiatives and programs as required.

    The incumbent will also be required to conduct fire and life safety and other inspections. The incumbent will be required to conduct fire investigations to determine origin and cause and produce investigation reports. The incumbent will be required to perform other related duties as assigned including the training of paid-on-call firefighters.

    Assignments and responsibilities are performed under the general supervision and performance is subject to review, inspection and evaluation by the Assistant Fire Chief – Prevention/Investigation.

    Must have completed a minimum of Grade 12 education preferably supplemented by post-secondary courses in Communications;
    Must be certified to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)

    Standards as:
    Fire Inspector Level 1
    Fire Investigator Level 1
    Fire and Life Safety Educator Level 1 or Fire Instructor Level 1
    Must be knowledgeable about the use of computers including, but not limited to, the use of word processing, presentation graphics and data management software;
    Must be able to competently prepare grammatically correct English language reports;
    Superior knowledge of the methods, procedures and practices used in fire prevention activities;
    Working knowledge of Bylaws, Acts and Regulations pertaining to fire and life safety;
    Able to provide effective presentations, courses and tours to community groups and public-school classes and to assist in providing training programs to paid-on-call firefighters;
    Able to recognize, rectify and/or report upon actual or potential fire safety hazards;
