    The Arnprior & District Memorial Hospital is participating in an initiative set out by the Ministry of Health to hire clinical externs through the Enhanced Extern Program. This program was developed to provide an opportunity for students, and to support human health resources and ease pressures that are a result of the pandemic. We are seeking to hire multiple clinical externs in our Emergency Department.

    POSITION: Clinical Extern

    DEPARTMENT: Emergency

    STATUS : Casual, Part time, Full Time

    SCHEDULE : Days/ Evenings/ Nights/ Weekends [Mixed shifts]

    HOURS: Maximum 75.0 Bi-weekly hours

    HOURLY RATE: $20.60/hr.

    Clinical Externs are employed as unregulated care providers, working under the supervision of a regulated health professional, to enhance and effectively support safety and quality of care for patients of ARH. This program is open to clinical learners including students of nursing, respiratory therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and paramedic programs. This provides them with opportunities to apply their knowledge, develop important skills for a career in health care, gain patient care experience, and to work with and learn from our incredible nursing and allied health team.

    The program is designed to provide supernumerary support. Clinical Externs do not replace staff or staffing shortages.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • The clinical extern will be working in the capacity as an unregulated health care provider. Clinical externs work in collaboration with a unit clinical team under direct and/or indirect supervision of an appointed registered health professional
    • Assists the unit clinical team in a team-based model of care to provide support to the patient care teams by assisting with basic clinical tasks including:
      • Performing vital signs under supervision
      • Documenting all interventions for patient care
      • Observe and report changes in patient's condition
      • Lifting, positioning, turning, transferring, and ambulating patients
      • Transporting patients and specimens as required
      • Weighing patients
      • Feeding, bathing/grooming and toileting
      • Bed making
      • Responding to patient requests, including call bells
      • Assisting with emergency situations as directed
      • Providing one-on-one observation and care of designated patients
      • Other duties as required

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Currently enrolled in and/or have completed one of the following:
      • Completed second, third or fourth year of an approved baccalaureate nursing program
      • Completed a minimum of the first year of a practical nursing program
      • Completed the second year of a paramedic program
      • Completed a minimum of one semester of an occupational therapy program
      • Completed a minimum of one semester of a physiotherapy program
      • Completed second or third year of a respiratory therapy program
      • Internationally Trained Nurse (without a CNO license)
    • Current BCLS
    • Knowledge of body mechanics, and safe patient lift and transfer practices
    • Ability to work within an interdisciplinary team
    • Effective communication skills to provide ongoing support and care for diverse patients and communicate any concerns, changes in the patient's condition
    • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills
    • Commitment to maintain dignity and self-esteem of patients and families in delivery of care
    • Proficient computer/technological skills
    • Ability to work under pressure, request assistance when required, and to adapt to change rapidly

    PREFERRED:

    • Successful completion of a recent clinical placement in an acute clinical area
    • Basic knowledge of performing vital signs, sterility and aseptic technique and established Infection Control and Occupational Health and Safety practices
