This position is currently a hybrid position where you are expected to attend the Ottawa office at least 2 days a week.

The Position

Reporting to the AVP, Strategic Communications and Public Affairs, the Translator is responsible for providing professional translation services (mainly English to French) so that written texts are available in both official languages for the CLHIA and to affiliated organizations as per management services agreements.

What you will be working on:

  • Translate, mainly from English to French, a wide variety of documents ranging in complexity in an accurate and timely manner, ensuring quality and clarity, proper style and reflection of the political/industry environment and other sensitivities.
  • Documents could include: submissions, industry guidelines, consumer guides, reports and surveys, presentations, press releases, conference materials and website content
  • Check French documents posted on the website ensuring functionality (e.g., that links work), and liaise with appropriate stakeholder to resolve issues.
  • Coordinate the daytoday workflow of the translation service, receiving, triaging and assigning requests from internal clients.
  • Act as the daytoday point of contact for external translation services, following up on requests and receiving invoices, checking for accuracy, and routing for approval and payment.
  • Ensure accuracy of translation: conduct terminology research that may involve shared software, clarify meaning with original author or stakeholders, and revise translations prepared by other translators.
  • Contribute to Translation Services databank.
  • Provide appropriate background context for external translation services; review and occasionally revise documents translated by freelancers.

What you will bring:

Professional qualifications and Experience

  • University degree in a related field with 25 years of related experience
  • Bilingual (English/French) and certification from an association of professional translators
Skills and Competencies

  • Understanding of life and health insurance terminology and life insurance business operations and products and service
  • Communication skills (verbal, written) including the ability to effectively build relationships
  • Ability to work collaboratively with individuals at all levels within and outside the Association
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of tools, including Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and SharePoint
  • Organization, project and time management skills to handle multiple projects, including those with tight time
