Position Information:


This position is responsible for planning, organizing, controlling, and evaluating health records coding, clinical information analysis and coding education corporately, in accordance with established practices, legislation, hospital policies, rules and regulations and to meet the overall objectives of the Financial Services Department and the Ottawa Hospital.


Supported by two Supervisors and an Educator, the incumbent will lead a team of specialized HIM-certified professional staff (55 coders and 8 analysts), and will build efficient processes, develop team skillset, and nurture strategic relationships to improve health data capture and quality across multiple integrated health information systems., This critical work will inform decision makers, stakeholders, funding bodies, researchers, and many others about the care being provided to patients and resources expended to do so at The Ottawa Hospital.


The incumbent is familiar with coding standards and reporting guidelines for government funded healthcare organizations and will be responsible for maintaining and continuously improving the timeliness and quality of the data being submitted to CIHI, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, and Cancer Care Ontario.

Within their own team, the Manager, Coding & Data Quality applies learning and accountability consistent with a just culture, coaching and mentoring staff to ensure the team delivers on its strategic and operational priorities.


The incumbent is responsible for developing, managing, and adhering to a corporate budget, including providing quarterly forecasts and managing any outsourced activities, such as contractor companies employed to meet coding turnaround times when required.

This is a temporary position until approximately August 31, 2025.


What you will bring:


  • Four (4) year Undergraduate degree in Health Information Management from a CCHIMrecognized program with active certification (preferred) or similar discipline (Health Quality, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Hospital Administration, Data Science, Business, Finance etc.);
  • Certified Health Information Manager (CHIM) through the Canadian College of Health Information Managers or equivalent designation through the American Health Information Management Association or Active member of Canadian Health Information Management Association with currency in CPE (continuing professional education credits) as required;
  • Five (5) years of experience in a health information department and/or patient registration or health care system in a midsize to large organization;
  • Three (3) years experience leading large teams of professionals in a midsize to large acute care facility;
  • Two (2) years of experience in a large scale fully integrated HIS (Health Information System), i.e. Epic, in a mid
- size to large organization;

  • Demonstrated skill and two (2) years of experience in analyzing large and complex systems and data sets ,utilizing statistical techniques and data reporting tools to produce various reports and visualizations ( i.e. dashboards, graphs, tables, presentations);
  • Two (2) years¿ experience managing a budget and determining resource requirements based on throughput volumes;
  • Effective and strategic communicator and leader, able to establish strong relationships at all levels of the organization;
  • Demonstrates TOH values in their work and interpersonal relationships leading by example and inspiring others to strive for excellence with their work;
  • Empathetic and collaborative leader, coach and mentor, promoting inclusion and diversity and a culture of learning and continuous improvement;
  • Strong analytical, systems and problemsolving skills, demonstrated ability to establish credibility with Information Technology leaders;
  • Excellent prioritization and risk management skills and adaptability in a high paced and stressful environment with in fluctuating deadlines and priorities;
