Position Scope:

The Community Support Worker supports Participants who reside in the community and shares responsibility with DCS/DSP and the Manager and Assistant Manager, Community Living, to ensure the program is administered in a manner that fosters and promotes independence, self-reliance, security and social inclusion by supporting a flexible and responsive delivery system that incorporates the strengths of a participant in addition to their personal and community resources.

This program is delivered using a person-directed and collaborative approach.
This position reports to the Manager, Community Living and Assistant Manager, Community Living.

The Community Support Worker has an ongoing and continued duty and obligation to fulfill their responsibilities in such a manner (be it direct or indirect) which does not (in any way, shape, or form) damage or hinder the success of the Community Living Program, the Participants of the Program, and/or the Sunset Community as a whole.


Principal Responsibilities:

The Community Support Worker is responsible for the following duties:

  • Assisting Participants to maximize independence in their instrumental activities of daily living, such as:
  • Maintaining a household including an oversight to ensure safety
  • Laundry
  • Shopping and banking
  • Budgeting and money management
  • Preparing meals
  • Transportation for accessing community services such as stores, recreational activities, and medical appointments
  • Participating in educational, leisure, volunteer, or work activities;
  • Assist Participant(s) to build and maintain connections and relationships with family, friends and other community members and resources;
  • Assist Participant(s) with accessing professional supports and the promotion and maintenance of their health and wellness including medication management and administration if required;
  • Recognize the potential of a Participant and facilitate opportunities for their continued growth and development as an individual;
  • Delay the need for, or assist in the prevention of, admission to a staffed residential support option;
  • Participate in the creation and implementation of individual contracts and personcentered reviews;
  • Maintain relationships with each Participant that is respectful of: 1) their individuality, rights, and freedoms, 2) their rights for privacy and confidentiality of personal information; and 3) the appropriateness of an Employee-Participant relationship;
  • Attending training such as: inservice education, seminars, workshops, etc., as required by the Employer or DCS/DSP, to maintain core competencies and/or other training that may be offered;
  • Other related duties that may be assigned by the Manager and Assistant Manager Community Living, Manager, Holistic Services, Staff Nurse/Supervisor or Director Health and Holistic Services

Required Qualifications:


  • Graduation from Grade 12 or GED, with desire to support people with disabilities.
  • Acquiring and maintaining the Core Competencies set forth by the Department of Community Services, namely:
  • Fire and Life Safety
  • Basic Principles and Practices of Personal Care
  • Principles and Practices of Non-Aversive Behavioural Support
  • WHMIS Training
  • MANDT Training
  • Medication Awareness and Administration
  • Insulin Administration
  • Standard First Aid with CPR Level C
  • Current Class 5 Drivers License.
  • Physically capable of performing the duties of the position.
  • Experience providing support to persons with disabilities.
  • Possess a safe and reliable vehicle which has a current and valid provincial safety inspection, as well as the appropriate tires for the season. Must be willing to use this vehicle for work. Must be able to insure the vehicle with $2,000,000 liability coverage
  • Must be able to support participants utilizing a personcentered approach
  • Ability to work independently with mínimal supervision

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Graduation from an approved Human Services Worker, Developmental Worker, Residential Rehabilitation Worker, or Continuing Care Assistance program;
  • Experience supporting individuals with disabilities in an independent living environment;
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills;
  • Able to work cooperatively with all members of the Sunset Community (staff, volunteers, students, Participants, etc.);

Judgement and Initiative Required:


  • Maintain supportive and professional, personcentered relationships that are inclusive and fosters continued independence;
  • Must display good judgement and utilize skills obtained as per MANDT principles in supporting participants whose behaviour may at times be above baseline
  • Must be able to work with minimum direct supervision much of the time.
  • Recognize when to seek support from DSP Care Coordinator, the Manager Community Living and/or the Assistant Manager, Community Living in matters of deteriorating participant capacity
