Employment Type:

Part-time, contract role


Contract Length:

Until end of year with possibility of annual renewal


Estimated Contract Hours:

258 hours per year, averaging 5 hours per week. Due to the nature of this role, hours may vary based on emerging and priority events and issues.


Compensation:

Commensurate with experience

Position Description:


The BLLHA is looking for a highly motivated individual for the part-time contract role of Communications & Government Relations Strategist to assist the organization's communications, media relations, government relations, and related activities.

The position reports directly to the Executive Director with the intention of assisting the organization's research, advocacy, issues management, strategic reporting and public affairs.


Core Responsibilities:


  • Develop and implement comprehensive communication strategies that effectively convey the organization's mandate and values.
  • Craft compelling messaging for the media, including news releases and social media updates according to CP Style.
  • Foster strong relationships with media outlets and journalists to position favorable coverage and help manage destination issues.
  • Work with BLLHA's Operations Administrator to communicate member and industry correspondence, manage BLLHA's websites, and help promote events.
  • Help execute and analyze research data to craft strong factbased advocacy positions.
  • Have an eagle eye attention to detail as an editor for our team.
  • Maintain consistent brand messaging across all communication channels.
  • Manage processes related to CASL, PIPEDA and other communicationsspecific policies.
  • Help manage communications and marketing related budgets.
  • Act as editor in chief in the production of content for correspondence to government, developing presentations and speaking notes, reports and bulletins, etc. for advocacy purposes.
  • Cultivate and nurture relationships with government officials, agencies, and stakeholders across all orders of government including the local municipalities, Government of Alberta, Parks Canada and federal ministries.
  • Help the Executive Director advocate for the interests and priorities of the organization through compelling and diplomatic communication and relationship building.
  • Stay current on legislative and regulatory changes on policy impacting the hospitality industry, providing analysis and recommendations as needed to manage risks and leverage opportunities.
  • Collaborate with industry peers and associations to advance shared objectives.
  • Represent BLLHA on local and regional committees to proactively monitor for destination concerns around reputation, brand and economic/workplace performance.
  • Promote a culture of diplomacy, inclusivity, and diversity during all business interactions.
  • Bridge divides and facilitate constructive dialogue among stakeholders with differing perspectives.
  • Uphold the organization's values and destinationlevel commitments.
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with sector associations, local and provincial destination marketing organizations, etc.
  • Support monthly and annual reporting to the Board of Directors, Executive Committee and membership.
  • Participate when required in administrative meetings.

Qualifications / Required Skills:


  • Bachelor Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in communications, marketing and/or stakeholder relations.
  • 7+ years of experience in government relations, including knowledge of local, provincial and federal stakeholders, departments and policy.
  • Experience within the tourism and hospitality sector.
  • Strong understanding of Alberta's political landscape, government procedures, and provincial mountaincommunity dynamics.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, InDesign, etc.
  • Strong understanding of social media including LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram, as well as experience coordinating digital ads with consultants.
  • Experience with graphic design and production (an asset, but not required).
  • Experience setting and managing budgets/reporting on variances.
  • Attention to detail, the ability to multitask and the ability to work independently.
  • Hospitalitycentric.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
