Job Description:
Estimator - Fabrications

Preparing estimates of parts and assemblies including material, labour and subcontracting of Pressure Vessels, Heat Exchangers, Autoclaves and various custom fabrications


Estimating functions include:


  • Review and clearly understand customer specifications and quality standards
  • Perform standard ASME calculations for determining design thicknesses
  • Gathering material estimates from sub venders
  • Gather estimates from service contractors; i.e. PWHT, Nondestructive Testing and Internal Vessel Lining, etc.
  • Effectively estimate labour required for manufacturing including parts, welding, machining and mechanical assembly for both custom fabrications as well as low volume production runs
  • Develop and maintain estimating standards for various areas of production

Sales functions may also include:


  • Preparing proposals to meet customer needs
  • Assist in the development of promotional programs
  • Promote sales growth with existing clients / Expand & grow (Maintain) existing customers.
The position will also play a role in determining new manufacturing practices and processes to improve competitiveness.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Work with sales, engineering and customers to develop mechanical designs to properly estimate the component and to finalize and submit quotations to customers
  • Develop manufacturing process steps and estimated labour run times to support that process
  • Perform detailed time studies to prove out accurate estimating tables
  • Compile quotations using supplied material costing and pricing from vendors
  • Participate in establishing selling prices and policies to support the business plan and a high level of corporate profit.
  • Work with the business team to develop the most costeffective product in the industry.
  • Maintain a high level of customer service to internal and external clients
  • Maintain an active review of competitors to insure competitive marketing practices.
  • Maintain support relationships with business teams. A relationship builder (seek and engage), collaborative.
  • Produce contract sheets based on estimate and actual vendor prices
  • Advise on methods and processes used in the preproduction meetings
  • Search out vendors and subcontractors required to support business needs
  • Work with Engineering as Required, particularly on projects requiring more intricate calculations
  • Recosting to verify project profit information
  • Identify risks associated with projects.

Your Skills Set:


  • Post-Secondary education
  • College education or equivalent industry experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of estimating experience in the steel fabrication industry or equivalent industry experience.
  • Familiar with ASME code and mechanical design calculations
  • Working knowledge of spreadsheets, word processing, CAD and the internet
  • Familiar with metal fabrication and blueprint reading.
  • Willing to travel when necessary.
  • Experience with design software packages for Pressure Vessels and Heat Exchangers
  • Experience with chemical equipment systems including mixers, pumps, valves, piping and industrial controls
