Job Summary:


Reporting to the Medical Director Anatomical Pathology and the Team Lead or designate, the Pathologists Assistant performs duties related to the operation of the Autopsy Service and Surgical Pathology including the examination of complex specimens; interpretation and reporting of tissue pathology, the design and implementation of clinical research projects; the development and maintenance of clinical materials and programs; and the supervision of morgue staff.


Duties/Accountabilities:

eviews patient charts for assigned autopsy cases and prepares a preliminary summary of clinical information. Notes special procedures or investigations to be performed and reviews autopsy consent with the Pathologist.


  • Performs post mortem prosection, including external examination, in place organ inspection, removal and dissection of organs, special procedures; records observations; and selects tissue samples for further study.
  • Reviews preliminary and final autopsy findings with the attending Pathologist; dictates reports, including observations, interpretations and correlation of clinical history and pathological findings as reviewed with the pathologist, for approval and signature of the responsible Pathologist.
  • Directs the preservation and storage of autopsy / surgical pathology tissues for clinical, medical, legal, and research/education purposes as consented.
  • Processes surgical pathology specimens, including prosection of placentas, selects tissue samples for histological examination, and may screen tissue slides for further processing and study, interprets findings and performs special procedures as indicated under the supervision of attending pathologist.
  • Supervises and coordinates the work activities of morgue staff by organizing work assignments and advising staff on workflow processes. Provides orientation to new staff in autopsy procedures.
  • Maintains the Autopsy Procedures Manual to current standards in keeping with published recommendations.
  • Provides technical instruction to Residents in Pathology in the prosection procedures related to autopsy and surgical pathology.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science Degree with courses in Human Anatomy.
  • Completion of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Registry (BOR) Pathologists' Assistant Certification Examination or the American Association of Pathologists' Assistants (AAPA) Fellowship Examination.
  • Three (3) years recent related experience in a clinical setting or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
