We are looking for an experienced, friendly, enthusiastic, and high-energy Medical Office Assistant to provide excellent medical and administrative support to the physicians and patients of Horizon Family Medicine by assisting in maintaining strong clinical operational efficiencies.

Strong attention to detail and ability to multi-task is a must.


Responsibilities / Requirements

Administrative

  • Maintaining efficient general patient flow within the clinic while exhibiting professionalism, empathy, and friendliness.
  • Checking patients in at reception area and notifying appropriate doctors of concerns regarding current patient status.
  • Assisting in updating patient personal information and creating new patient files within Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Ensuring that all patient demographic information is up to date and complete (including name, address, contact phone numbers, Personal Health Number, Next of Kin information).
  • Consistently recording pertinent / relevant personal and medical information within the EMR as well as specific dialogue information with patients (via phone or in person).
  • Provide clear instruction to patients regarding future appointment dates, follow up medical tests which may include fasting protocols instructions, distribution of forms and/or paperwork required, and/or any special instructions needed for other patient appointments.
  • Arranging special patient bookings regarding tests, specialist appointments, xrays, etc. Must be aware of patient forms required and special preparations needed for these tests and be able to communicate such information to patients.
  • Manage the referral process of booking specialist appointments both in Red Deer and externally.

Medical

  • Efficiently filling exam rooms with booked and walkin patient appointments, prepare patients for exam by the Doctor (ie. remove any necessary clothing when appropriate).
  • Properly setting up any surgical or dressing trays required by doctors for patient appointments.
  • Effectively collecting personal information and data including patient weights, heights, blood pressure, urine testing, eye exams, pap /swab set up.
  • Preparing patients for medicals (ie. Drivers, Employment) and complete and/or copy applicable medical forms before doctor/patient appointment.
  • If applicable (and as directed / under discretion of attending physician), assists doctors with specific medical procedures such as minor surgeries, dressings, suture or cosmetic skin removals, ECG's, wart treatments etc.
  • Regular cleaning and sterilization of exam rooms, station storage and medical equipment. This may also include temporary and emergency cleaning in the patient bathrooms or exam rooms are compromised.
  • Organization of Medication Sample cabinet and performs regular checks to ensure samples are not staledated.
  • Effective collection of patient swabs and specimens taken by Doctor, following requisitions required, recording procedures and specific medical information in EMR and being aware of the laboratory transportation process.
  • As required, daily sterilization/reprocessing of medical speculum and appropriate equipment including proper documentation of sterilization processes.

Education and Personal Requirements

  • 23 years of experience as a Medical Office Assistant
  • Completion of postsecondary training with a focus on medical terminology/processes and possesses significant experience working in a medical, clinical environment.
  • Preference for completion of the Medical Office Assistant Program or Unit Clerk Certificate Program from a recognized postsecondary institution.
  • Strong experience working with an integrated Electronic Medical Records computer system.

Salary:
$18.00-$21.00 per hour
