The Opportunity:

The role of the Coordinator is to plan, deliver and evaluate the "You're in Charge" Program.

You're in Charge (YIC) is a pediatric self-management program to help youth with a health condition (age 13 to 15) develop self-management skills and to enable parents/caregivers to initiate discussion leading to more independent self-management in their youth.

YIC also works within the IWK, the community and with families to prepare for the transition from pediatric to adult care.

The YIC Coordinator works closely with the Transition Coordinator, Children's Health Program, and supports the Transition of Care committee as well as the Youth Learning Series and the Children's Health Program orientation.


YIC is a peer-led, youth engagement focused, and evidence-based intervention developed by the IWK Health Centre, the Dalhousie School of Occupational Therapy, Chronic Condition Management Research Group, and by youth who live with health conditions.

The program engages a team of trained youth leaders, clinicians, students, and volunteers to deliver various aspects of the program.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for all aspects of the planning and delivery of You're In Charge.
  • Develops promotional materials for program including social media posts, videos, presentations, rack cards and posters.
  • Recruits and screens program participants.
  • Communicates with participants leading up to the program, ensures all forms (including evaluation tools) are complete and sends out welcome packages.
  • Develops and revises program materials, including appropriate content for virtual and/or inperson workshops.
  • Recruits, interviews, trains, and supports youth living with health conditions as youth leaders.
  • Identifies potential youth leaders and program facilitators.
  • Provides support to facilitators who are responsible to deliver parents component of program.
  • Develops training guidelines for youth leaders and facilitators.
  • Works closely with the Transition Coordinator, Children's Health Program, and supports the Transition of Care committee as well as the Youth Learning Series and the Children's Health Program orientation.
  • Supports and cochairs the Transition of Care Committee, responsible for agenda, meeting minutes, updates, and ongoing communication with multidisciplinary group.
  • Develop, cofacilitate the Children's Health Orientation session on Adolescent Health in partnership with Transition Coordinator and Youth Advisory Council (YAC) Coordinator.

Hours of Work:

Monday - Friday, schedule to be determined, flexible work arrangements may be available.


Your Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in a healthrelated discipline or a combination of relevant education, training, and experience.
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in project leadership/management required.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in program facilitation and program planning required.
  • Experience with youth engagement and volunteer management.
  • Experience developing and managing partnerships.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills required.
  • Ability to work independently required.
  • Experience with Primary Health Care, Population Health, and Community Development approaches.
  • Ability to develop partnerships and engage partners.
  • Ability to engage effectively with community partners.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, including social media; computer skills required.
  • Program planning and design.
  • Ability to use Adult Education techniques and approaches, including facilitation skills.
  • Knowledge and experience with youth engagement techniques.
