Reporting to the Coordinator, Sport Science and Performance the Head Coach, Strength, and Conditioning, works closely with varsity coaching staff, as well as medical staff to provide comprehensive support to all student-athletes.

The Head Strength and Conditioning Coach provides expertise, guidance, and supervised training in the area of physical preparation for all varsity student-athletes and teams at Thompson Rivers University.

The Head Strength and Conditioning Coach implements, conducts, and monitors strength and conditioning activities; assists with return-to-sport of injured athletes and oversees the management of the high-performance athletic facility.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In collaboration with varsity head coaches, plan, design, implement, facilitate, and evaluate periodized annual strength and conditioning programs for varsity teams.
  • Responsible for the development, monitoring and implementation of strength and conditioning programming for varsity teams
  • Works closely with medical staff on injury prevention and recovery programs for varsity teams.
  • Assists with returntosport protocols of injured athletes and works with team medical staff and respective head coach regarding appropriate progression of their returntopractice and returntocompetition.
  • Provide expertise in strength training and physical conditioning as requested by the head coaches of the varsity teams.
  • Schedule strength and conditioning workouts in cooperation with the head coach of each specific varsity sport, and coordinate access to the highperformance training facility in an equitable and safe manner.
  • Responsible for maintaining the varsity high performance training facility in a clean and safe environment and keep an accurate inventory of equipment.
  • Responsible for ordering/reordering all equipment as required.
  • Manage the development and maintenance of a TRU Strength and Conditioning student internship program to provide:
  • Volunteer assistance for the supervision and coaching of student athletes for varsity teams.
  • Leadership and mentorship training for future strength and conditioning coaches.
  • Equal opportunities and experiences in Strength and Conditioning for students of all gender identities and ethnicities
  • Assist in the implementation of fundraising activities such as youth strength and conditioning camps and clinics
  • Organize and manage strength and conditioning camp programs and other fundraising activities to assist in the development of a suitable budget for support staff, equipment purchases, continuing education efforts and other associated program expenses in a supplementary manner. This may include summer camps or spring/winter break camps for schoolaged youth athletes, as well as clinics or conferences for local coaches and fitness professionals.
  • Lead the budget preparation process; including updating equipment needs and/or upgrades recommended to provide athletes the best possible strength training equipment available. Budget requirements for assistant coaching positions, specialized experts, professional development, graduate assistant positions and/or student intern programs may also be reviewed as part of the budgeting process.
  • Maintain and monitor accurate records on the strength program of each team and specific individual workouts of all studentathletes. Execute all forms of testing and monitor key performance indicators.
  • Participation in continuing education opportunities and events related to professional development in the field of strength and conditioning, sport performance, sport science and injury management are required on a regular basis.
  • Be present and punctual for all workouts with studentathletes/teams.
  • Other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required, with emphasis on exercise physiology, kinesiology, biomechanics, athletic therapy, or physical education. Master's degree in a related field preferred
  • Minimum of three years of related experience, or equivalent
  • Minimum Certification required (at least one of the following):
  • National Strength and Conditioning Association
  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist
  • Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa)
  • SCCC or MSCC
  • Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) CEP
  • National Academy of Sports Medicine
  • Performance Enhancement Specialist
  • Other preferred certifications or qualifications:
  • NCCP coaching certification in sport coaching or related activities (weightlifting, athletics, gymnastics, etc.)
  • Functional Movement Screen (FMS)
  • Other fitness or rehabilitation course certifications
  • Valid CPR-C/Standard First Aid/AED certification required.
