Position Type:
Temporary Full-Time - approximately one year


The Coordinator, Health & Safety is responsible for providing leadership in planning, developing, implementing and maintaining a corporate health and safety program that promotes safety awareness, provides for a safe working environment for all workers that meets or exceeds legislative & regulatory requirements and employs best practices.

The Coordinator, Health & Safety, collaborates with the Senior Team, Human Resources Department, Department Managers, Maintenance, the Joint Occupational Health Committee, union partners and staff to ensure consistency and completeness of the Safety Program across the organization.


  • Provides leadership in planning, developing, implementing and maintaining the HDSHRC Worker Safety Program.
  • Works with stakeholders to promote and provide safety expertise and in the development of the HDSHRC Safety Program.
  • Supports managers with investigating employee incident reports, participating in root cause analysis and developing corrective actions to prevent a reoccurrence, and communicating findings to employees.
  • Conducts program assessments to identify and recommend safety program quality improvement initiatives.
  • Acts as Management Co-Chair of the Joint Health and Safety Committee and participates in related activities, including workplace inspections and policy review.
  • Responsible and accountable for Ministry of Labour (MOL) and Public Health inspector inquires and investigation including the follow up on any identified orders or requirements.
  • Ensures that safety and infection prevention and control guidelines are complied with prior to applicable construction and renovation projects.
  • In coordination with Environmental Services, ensures that annual asbestos assessment and abatement is complete.
  • Works in coordination with appropriate parties to ensure compliance with legislation and Fire Safety requirements including implementation of best practice and the maintenance of the Code Red policy and Fire Safety Plans.
  • Works in coordination with the appropriate parties in order to develop, maintain and evaluate the Hospital's Emergency Preparedness program including policies, procedures and training.
  • Acts as System Administrator for the Hospital's internal Incident Reporting System.
  • Lead for the Hospital's Harassment and Violence Prevention Program which includes policy development and maintenance, conducting of risk assessments, creation of safety plans and conducting related investigations.
  • Analyzes hazardous conditions and assists with risk assessment to help with the prioritization and budgeting for corrective actions.
  • Collects, analyzes, maintains and reports statistical data essential for an effective safety program.
  • Recommends essential health and safety requirements in all applicable purchasing actions.
  • Coordinates with management and Human Resources to ensure that unsafe employee behavior is corrected.

  • A relevant diploma or degree from an accredited college or university required.
  • Occupational Health and Safety Certificate or equivalent is preferred.
years of experience implementing and promoting safe work practices and policies within a hospital environment or equivalent preferred.

  • Previous disability and case management experience considered an asset
  • Experience with workplace inspection and job hazard analysis required.
  • Experience with leading investigations in one or more of the follow areas: accident, employee, labour relations, violence or harassment investigations is required.
  • Understanding of current legislation, Codes of Practice, Safety Bulletins and other safe work practice requirements and recommendations.
  • Must possess superb writing and content development skills; as well as strong presentation and verbal communication skills.
  • Must possess systems development, planning and organizational skills sufficient to develop proposals for policies, procedures, goals and objectives.
