JOB SUMMARY


The Managing Librarian performs a wide range of reference, literature, administrative, technical, and financial duties essential to the efficient daily operation of the Health Sciences Library ("the Library").

This includes the acquisition, development, organization, provision and maintenance of resources and information to all Lakeridge Health team members (staff, privileged staff, learners, volunteers, etc.) ("team members"); processing, circulation and maintenance of the library collection, interlibrary loan and document delivery management, literature searches, reference services and Health Sciences Library promotion and communication between internal and external contacts.

The position reports directly to the Manager, Academic Affairs and LHEARN and works closely with the Director, Medical Affairs, Academic Affairs, and LHEARN and Chief, Academic Affairs and Research.


JOB DUTIES:

  • Manages daytoday operations of the Library.
  • Provides research and reference service for all team members.
  • Prepares and delivers orientation and training on the use of online resources to staff, physicians, students and volunteers
  • Establishes ongoing communication links with team members and programs, ensuring awareness and understanding of Library services.
  • Administers and performs all circulation services; i.e. check in/check outs, holds, overdue notices
  • Coordinates library space reservations for training and occasional meetings.
  • Develops and maintains policies and procedures for all aspects of library operations and interprets these policies to team members, including external partners as required.
  • Catalogues and classifies library materials using an integrated library system, including original cataloguing.
  • Evaluates and analyzes LH's library/information needs and resources and makes recommendations to the for methods to improve access to such resources.
  • Liaises with the Information Technology (IT) staff to ensure the proper functioning of the electronic library resources used by the Health Sciences Library.
  • Makes recommendations regarding the design, implementation, and maintenance of library systems to facilitate access to information.
  • Helps to maintain library databases. Oversees input of data in accordance with Library procedures.
  • Evaluates the Library's collection annually according to nationally accepted standards (Brandon-Hill, Doody's, MLA's Master Guide) and established guidelines that reflect Library goals and objectives and users' needs
  • Conducts comprehensive literature searches selecting appropriate bibliographic databases for clinical and medical staff in support of evidencebased decisionmaking.
  • Provides interlibrary loans and document delivery services for items requested by LH team members as well as requests from external libraries using online interlibrary loan management systems and arranges for delivery of same.
  • Scans current literature on information management and services to keep uptodate with professional standards, new resources, technical skills, and changing information technologies
  • Collects, prepares and analyzes statistical reports of library service usage, i.e., monthly/annual tracking of requests for documents, circulation, literature searches, ILL's, etc.
  • Researches and applies for all applicable funding opportunities, including grants, etc. to support financial sustainability.
  • Oversees invoice reconciliation of library accounts performed. Liaises with publishers and internal accounting group concerning invoices.
  • Records library expenditures to budget lines on a monthly basis, i.e., interlibrary loan, supplies, document delivery, databases, books, etc. and tracks them against the approved operational budget.
  • Coordinates purchase and maintenance of both print and electronic resources
  • Liaises with vendor representatives to review/renew existing resources and trial new products
  • Establishes and maintains rapport with current and potential library clients and partnering organizations, i.e., all university and college learners, college and university preceptors and students.
  • Creates and designs promotional materials
  • Coordinates special events, e.g., exhibits, book displays, book sales, open house etc.
  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates library technical and/or clerical students and volunteers, preparing work schedules and approval of timecards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of an ALA accredited Masters degree in Library Science or Information Science, or equivalent preferred;
  • A minimum of 3 (three) years' experience as a librarian in an academic, healthcare
