The YMCA of Southern Interior BC has a child care growth plan that currently operates 13 multi-age child care locations, serves over 500 families and is on target to serve up to 900 families by building and opening several more child care centers over the next few years.


Reporting to the Child Care Manager you will fulfill a wide range of duties relating to picking up and transporting children by bus from their schools to the YMCA after School Care Centres.

The Bus Driver is responsible for the transportation of children being safely transported from their school to their respective centre.

The regular hours of this position will be Monday to Friday from 7:30-9:00am and 1:30pm-3:30pm and will include monthly staff training, early dismissal days and possible hours in our Winter/Spring break/Summer and Professional Day care programs driving children ages 5-12 years.


If the following sounds like a good day at work, then this job might be for you:

  • To ensure staff are on the bus as required when transporting minimum of a single child.
  • To ensure a safe and legal transport and use of vehicle
  • To be responsible for knowing which children are being picked up and knowing which children are being dropped off at their respective centres as well as helping children on and off busses when necessary
  • To release children only to those authorized by parent/guardian, to ask for identification in order to ensure that the authorized pickup has been verified
  • To be responsible for taking a face count before leaving each school and centre to ensure that no children have been left behind.
  • To correctly fill out and initial daily bus roster
  • To Ensure all children remain seated at all times and face forward and ensure seatbelts are fastened (where appropriate)
  • To Ensure bags/backpacks are not obstructing walkways and exits, ensure children keep all body parts and belongings inside the vehicle and ensure no food or beverages are consumed on the bus
  • To be Responsible for making phone calls to inform fleet dispatcher of delays due to inclement weather, breakdowns, etc.
  • To provide support to childcare leaders with the supervision of children aged 12
  • To interact directly using the YMCA core values with the children and encourage interactions between children
  • To read, understand and implement all YMCA Policies and Procedures as outlined in the Manual
  • To ensure that all safety and supervision standards are implemented and maintained according to CCFL and YMCA requirements
  • To secure all confidential files
  • To maintain the security of the vehicle
  • Other tasks as directed from your Manager
  • To communicate with Manager around centre specific issues that relate to the busing regulations or other health and safety concerns
  • Maintains safety and supervision in accordance with provincial licensing requirements and standards
  • Builds healthy relationships with children, parents, teachers, colleagues and external stakeholders
  • Participates in YMCA of Southern Interior BC community initiatives such as; Strong Kids Campaign, Healthy Kids Day, etc.
  • To read, understand, and follow all Provincial and YMCA requirements and standards

We'd love to from people with:

  • Have completed a course or a combination of courses of a least 20 hours duration in child development, guidance, health and safety, or nutrition
  • Current First Aid certification with CPR level B or C
  • Certificate/diploma/degree in a related field, and/or ECE Assistant certification (considered an asset)
  • Valid B.C. Class 4 or Class 2 operator/driver's licence, providing a clean drivers abstract every 12 months
