Medication Information Consultant:


Primary Purpose:

As a drug information consultant, the successful applicant will be responsible for handling drug information requests from healthcare providers and the general public.


Nature of Work:

medSask is a non-profit organization that supports positive health outcomes in Saskatchewan residents by providing healthcare professionals and the general public with access to on-demand, accurate, evidence-based drug information.

medSask also plays a critical role in supporting the COVID vaccination and treatment efforts throughout the province.

medSask staff contribute to undergraduate education at the University of Saskatchewan College of Pharmacy and Nutrition, offer continuing education for healthcare professionals, and collaborate on drug-therapy projects with other health organizations and partners.

Reporting to the Associate Director, the successful applicant will function with a high level of independence, decision-making, and accountability.

This position also requires short, medium, and long-term planning, and the ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment, balancing competing deadlines, and multi-tasking.

Some travel may be required (meetings, conferences), as is attendance at occasional evening and weekend events.


Typical Duties or Accountabilities:


  • Accept and respond to questions on drugs and drug therapy from healthcare providers and consumers; gather appropriate background information to determine actual drugrelated concern
  • Use the medical literature (and other resources as necessary) to research questions and synthesize concise, relevant, evidencebased responses
  • Communicate oral and/or written responses to callers using appropriate language level
  • Followup with callers to determine outcome and provide further assistance if needed on selected questions
  • Review peer responses to drug information questions for quality assurance purposes
  • Contribute to the development and/or review of guidelines (e.g. minor ailment and selfcare conditions prescribing for pharmacists)
  • Deliver lectures/tutorials to undergraduate students in both the pharmacy and nutrition programs (if required/desired)
  • Supervise pharmacy students during experiential learning placements at medSask
  • Contribute articles for medSask newsletters and content for the medSask website
  • Assist, as required, on drug information education and research contracts with various healthcare organizations
  • Presentations on various topics (e.g. continuing professional development, consumer meetings) to pharmacists, other health care professionals, and the general public
  • Occasional "oncall" monitoring of the medSask phone lines outside of regular business hours (if needed)

Qualifications

Education:
A first professional degree in Pharmacy (e.g. Bachelor's degree or PharmD)


Licenses:
The successful applicant must be licensed (or eligible to be licensed) to practice pharmacy in Saskatchewan


Experience:
At least 2 years of pharmacy practice experience.

Preference will be given to applicants with current community pharmacy experience, and those with recent experience as a preceptor for pharmacy students.

Experience in drug information and critical appraisal considered an asset.


Skills:

Broad general knowledge of therapeutics; strong understanding of current pharmacy practice, especially as it relates to the expanded scope of practice; excellent critical thinking skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team; effective time management and organizational skills; self-motivation; strong interpersonal skills, ability to effectively embrace change in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

The salary range, based on 1.0 FTE, is $66, ,174.00 per annum. The starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
