Overview of Position


Assurant has an exciting opportunity for a Tax Manager This job is responsible for management of tax compliance and planning in the area of sales tax, premium tax and corporate income in the Toronto tax department.

This is a hybrid virtual role and we offer flexible working arrangements.


What will be my duties and responsibilities in this job?

30% Management and preparation of monthly and quarterly tax provision

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and yearend income tax provisions on Canadian GAAP purposes and related schedules
  • Prepare tax provisions on US GAAP purposes and complete the schedules/reporting package required by the US Tax Department
  • Prepare premium tax provisions for insurance entities
  • Review and document uncertain tax positions for the purposes of financial reporting under IFRS

10% Supervision of monthly and quarterly tax installment payments and premium tax returns filing

  • Oversee and manage monthly and quarterly tax installments and ensure the payments are accurate and on time
  • Manage monthly sales tax payable account reconciliation and resolve discrepancies with premium processing team
  • Review the premium tax returns prepared by the tax analyst
  • Coach and train staff

40% Management of annual Corporate Income Tax returns and GST returns

  • Prepare annual corporate income tax returns for the Canadian branches and Canadian companies and coordinate with tax consultants
  • Manage the process of preparing and filing of Special Attribution Method GST/HST annual returns for the insurance entities
  • Prepare the Annual GST Information returns for the insurance entities

20% Tax Audits and Projects

  • Research and analyze tax issues, prepare, and review responses to tax audit queries for sales tax and corporate income tax returns.
  • Liaise with Federal and provincial tax authorities to resolve tax issues
  • Support with M&A activity and other tax projects as required
  • Conduct Tax research and provide adhoc reports and analysis to various sales tax issues

Responsibility for the work of others

  • Responsibility for managing project resources.

What are the requirements needed for this position?

  • This position requires a Bachelor degree in accounting/business and/or taxation.
  • Completion of CPA designation with a minimum of 3 years of experience in Canadian insurance taxation.
  • US Insurance tax experience is an asset.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
  • Knowledge of TaxPrep.
  • Strong supervisory and analytical skill are required.
