Position
Summary:


Under the direction of the Health and Safety Manager, the Health and Safety Officer will help to ensure that Seneca complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, the Environmental Protection Act, and other legislations relevant to the health and safety of employees.

The incumbent will research, develop, and administer OHSA-related programs in keeping with the College's needs and in compliance with appropriate legislation.

The incumbent will also provide strategic and technical advice to management for a broad range of occupational health and safety decisions as well as act as a resource and support local joint health and safety committees (JHSC).


Responsibilities:


Occupational Health and Safety:


  • Assists with the development and implementation of Occupational Health and Safety Policies, Procedures, and Safe Work Instructions.
  • Assists with conducting health and safetyrelated risk and hazard assessments, and job hazard assessments (JHAs) across all College departments and academic schools.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of automated recordkeeping systems for regulatory compliance, collecting and analyzing injury data to identify trends with respect to workplace accidents.
  • Provides strategic and technical advice and counsel to management and other employee groups on a broad range of occupational health and safety issues and decisions.
  • Aids managers/supervisors in investigating reported student and staff hazards and accidents at the College in collaboration with Security, Facilities and Human Resources, recommending corrective actions, evaluating the effectiveness of controls, and conducting followups regarding implementation.

JHSC Support Activities:


  • Provides Health and Safety resources and supports facilitation of JHSC meetings at assigned campuses.
  • Liaises with Cochairs and participates, reviews, and evaluates the completion of monthly workplace inspections at the assigned campus locations.
  • Provides and facilitates appropriate training to the JHSC members.

Training and Other Assigned Duties:


  • Participates in developing and conducting Health and Safety educational awareness programs for employees.
  • Provides other forms of employee training, such as WHMIS, safe lifting techniques, and new employee orientations, and develops training materials/resources to meet the specific needs of the diverse staff groups.
  • Ensures Collegewide awareness of and compliance with related laws and regulations from jurisdictional authorities such as the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training & Skills Development; the Ministry of the Environment; the Fire Department (with respect to stored flammable materials); and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB).

Qualifications:


Education:


  • Minimum completed two (2) year diploma or certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.

Experience:


  • Minimum three (3) years' experience in an occupational health and safety role.
  • Experience working with Industrial Hygiene, Ergonomics, Risk Assessment & Accident Investigation Techniques.

Skills:


  • Great analytical skills to identify, research and resolve health and safety concerns.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in order to interact effectively with Seneca's diverse student and staff population.
  • Strong ability to write technical reports and utilize Office software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
