Position Summary - The interpreter's primary responsibility is to provide high quality, visual communication for students in an educational setting. The individual will interpret and/or transliterate classroom lectures, classroom related activities, public events and other assignments as directed by the disability services coordinator. Excellent planning and organizational skills are required, attention to good relationship building and ongoing professional development is critical to the position.
- ASL interpreters must be bilingual (ASL and English) and bicultural (an understanding of Deaf culture), have graduated from an Interpreter Training Program, and demonstrate skill in a wide spectrum of ASL/English vocabulary choices aligned to student needs. Interpreters are encouraged to demonstrate competence on the Post-Secondary Sign Language Interpreting Screening Tool.
- Interpreters will abide by the Association of Visual Language Interpreters of Canada's (AVLIC) Code of Ethics and follow the Provincial Interpreting Services Guidelines.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Assess the language needs of the student and determine the optimal linguistic equivalence;
- Prepare for classes by reviewing course outlines and notes, and previewing textbooks to ensure understanding of any technical or specialized vocabulary, and meeting with students, instructors, presenters or tutors;
- Interpret contact hours as required by the student;
- Utilize student feedback to assess the effectiveness of interpretation/transliteration and adjust accordingly. This includes interpreting spoken English and signed information at a rate of speed appropriate to the assignment;
- Provide culture specific information and adapt the interpretation to facilitate communication between hearing and deaf cultures;
- Develop rapport with students and assist in resolution of interpretation concerns;
- Facilitate the provision of qualitative team interpreting where required including the resolution of any technical issues;
- Provide information to students, faculty and staff regarding interpretation communication issues as they relate to educational success and deafness in conjunction with the disability services team
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student issues within the disability services team;
- Attend meetings, record hours of service, and communicate with students, faculty and staff to maintain the flow of information critical to quality service;
- Participate in projects, committees and mentoring interpreting students as assigned by the disability services coordinator;
- All other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Education & Experience
- Graduation from an Interpreter Training Program (ITP) or equivalent.
- Ability to provide a linguistic match with the student's need in American Sign Language (ASL) or Contact Sign (Signed English).
- Membership in AVLIC and the West Coast Association of Visual Language Interpreters (WAVLI) preferred.
Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities
- Deemed "competent" on the Post-Secondary Sign Language Screen preferred.
- Postsecondary background (in addition to an ITP) preferred.
- Experience working within an educational team.
- Typewell training an asset.
- Interpreting or transliterating skills have been maintained and/or upgraded.
- Development of specialized content expertise.
- Enhancement of interpersonal communication skills.
