Job Summary


Working collaboratively with the Queen's community and Kingston community partners to support a safe and secure campus environment for Queen's University students, faculty, staff, and visitors, Campus Security and Emergency Services provides leadership in security services and expertise in investigation.

The Housing and Ancillary Services (H&A) team manages 4,940 student beds in 18 residence buildings, as well as off-campus rental apartment and housing properties, three dining halls, numerous retail foodservice locations on campus, the Donald Gordon Hotel and Conference Centre and Event Services.

CSES and H&A work together regularly, and maintaining effective collaboration and communication are critical to ensuring residence is a safe and welcoming environment for students.


Reporting to the Managers, CSES, and receiving daily work direction from the Security Supervisors (Supervisors) on shift, the Residence Security Patrollers (Patrollers) are responsible for the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors in residence and the protection of university property.

Patrollers also receive guidance and information from H&A management.


Patrollers will follow the policies and procedures set by Queen's University, CSES, and H&A and comply with all applicable regulations and laws to ensure the safety of the campus.

In addition, Patrollers will provide the Supervisors and H&A management with statements of their observations and assist in collecting evidence when directed, while understanding the need to be respectful to students, staff, visitors, including those who may have been impacted by or reporters of an incident.


Patrollers demonstrate a commitment to Indigenization - Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Anti-Racism, and Accessibility (I-EDIAA) and in a collaborative team environment, in interactions with students, staff, visitors, and community partners.

Patrollers contribute to providing focused security services for the university, primarily in residence by positively engaging the campus community by observing inappropriate behaviour, damages, and providing assistance when required while performing foot patrols.

The schedule for this position requires working night shifts and irregular overtime, sometimes at short notice.


Job Description:


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Perform work in accordance with the provisions of the Private Security and Investigative Services Act and regulations.
  • Foster a culture of campus community engagement through positive interaction with the university community within residence, being present at events and conducting foot patrols.
  • Maintain a visible presence within residence and provide verbal warnings to students and their guests who are contravening residence or university policies.
  • Recognize the unique residence environment as a student's home and adapt approaches accordingly.
  • Attend training provided by CSES and H&A staff.
  • Patrol university premises (primarily residence) to prevent and detect signs of mischief and ensure security of doors, windows, gates, and the general grounds.
  • Accurately document all activities and provide witness statements to a Supervisor as required.
  • Immediately report emergencies and major incidents to the Supervisor through the ERC to ensure the safety of students, staff, and visitors to the university.
  • Grant access when authorized by a supervisor or H&A management to university residence buildings, offices, parking lots, etc.
  • Under the direction of the Supervisor, protect evidence, which may be referred to the police and provide onsite assistance to victims.
  • Provide personal safety escorts for members of the university community.
  • Assist the Security Supervisors in executing the campus security plan at major university events, including but not limited to Orientation Week, Homecoming, Winter Shutdown, St. Patrick's Day, and expected or unplanned demonstrations.
