Controller Job Summary

Controller Responsibilities and Duties

  • Overseeing all financial reporting and accounting activities for the Synergy Group of Companies.
  • Preparing monthly reports including Financials, Cashflow, Budget, and other financial reports for the owners and Board Meetings.
  • Overseeing the daily processing of AR, AP, Purchasing, Payroll into the multicurrency accounting system.
  • Managing, coaching, motivating and directing a staff of 4 employees including Accounting, Payroll, Purchasing and Office Administration Departments.
  • Overseeing the preparation of payroll for personnel each month.
  • Implementing new procedures and protocols as changes occur, resolving conflict, conducting all relevant communications on behalf of the department.
  • Managing cash flow requirements across multiple bank accounts and dealing accordingly with the bank.
  • Monitor the banking and lending relationship and financial covenants imposed by the lender and monitor related covenant and financial metrics as required under lending arrangements
  • Understanding of foreign currency risk and hedging instrumentals including Letter of Credits with the bank.
  • Communicating with the company banker and other agencies (Export Development Canada, Canada Revenue Agency).
  • Knowledge of Export Development Corporation (EDC) Credit Insurance Policies to manage risk and grow working capital for the company.
  • Monitoring and updating project budgets and information into our accounting system, including allocation relating to work in progress and accruals.
  • Preparation of yearend working papers for the company external accountant.
  • Understanding of Insurance policies for the company's business (D&O, Professional, GCL, Open Cargo, Business Interruption, Bid Bonds).
  • Drive organizational, departmental and team initiatives by providing input and contributing to development and implementation.
  • Participate in the development of and support of the company's strategic plans.
  • Developing and improving internal controls and accounting procedures.
  • Negotiate and effectively execute due diligence process when required.
  • Preparing the financial part of inhouse Scientific Research Experimental & Development (SRED) claim each fiscal yearend.
  • Keep uptodate on current accounting policies including provincial and federal taxes.
  • Other special projects as required from the President.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Professional accounting designation (CPA)
  • Minimum 810 years accounting experience in a senior accounting or financial management role, preferable with an engineering or construction company
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills as well as conflict resolution abilities
  • Advanced computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office and Microsoft Dynamics GP financial reporting software
  • Impeccable analytical and organizational and time management skills
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Selfmotivated and selfdirected
  • Ability to work closely with a senior management team and the owners
  • Being a dog lover would be an asset
