About the opportunity:

The Packaging Services Specialist provides technical expertise, leadership and first line supervision of packaging projects.

The position is responsible for managing packaging projects in the areas related to packaging development in support of innovation, cost improvements and technical manufacturing packaging.

The position is accountable for providing directive and specialized knowledge to deliver on packaging development and project implementation to support the company business goals.


The attributes we are looking for:

  • Lead the technical development and execute stages of packaging development by designing and conducting qualification and validation packaging trials for all new products in support of innovation or new product business initiatives.
  • Work in conjunction with Manufacturing to understand and resolve any material and equipment performance problems. Provide recommendation and/or directive to manufacturing team members to successfully execute project deliverables.
  • Consult and provide Packaging support directive to Engineering for capital projects by communicating packaging requirements and coordinating any required testing or trials; and finalizing specifications.
  • Provide support to purchasing for sourcing initiatives including coordinating and documenting plant trials and leading approval of alternate materials.
  • Identify and evaluate packaging costs savings opportunities for both new and current packaging and implement accordingly to meet business savings objectives.
  • Manage the development and maintenance of a packaging specification database; document packaging specifications for the purpose of maintaining accurate records and ensure compliance to Company standards.
  • Manage and provide support to SCC and other barcoding technology development and maintenance.
  • Consult and provide directive to Corporate Quality Assurance by undertaking packaging supplier audits and participating in incoming material quality audits where required to ensure compliance to Company standards.
  • Research new packaging technologies and generate new packaging ideas and innovations to support the development of strategic packaging opportunities.

  • Participate in Vendor Performance reports, certification programs and integrated efficiency improvement teams to meet internal and external customer compliance.
  • Provide leadership and supervision to Packaging Technician or Students by participating in hiring and providing coaching and work direction.
  • Ability to travel to various North American Lactalis sites in Canada and the United States (up to 75% travel required). This travel will require overnight stays depending on the manufacturing site being supported.

What you will bring:


  • Postsecondary education/degree in Packaging related studies or equivalent industrial experience in a technical packaging role.
  • Minimum eight (8) to ten (10) years packaging industry experience
  • Experience in Designing & Leading Experiments to confirm acceptability & define root cause
  • Experience in performing Industry Standard test methods on Packaging materials
  • Strong understanding of statistics; specifically the implementation and use of SPC
  • Demonstrate a strong analytical ability in process troubleshooting and corrective action recommendation and validation
  • Understanding of GMP's & HACCP, specifically, in a food production environment
  • Detail oriented with a strong focus on accuracy
  • Ability to prioritize and work in a result oriented team environment
  • Valid driving license and reliable automobile
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Bilingual in English and French is an asset
