Scope of the Role


The Project Geologist is responsible for identifying, exploring, locating and defining potentially economic mineral deposits in an assigned area and within prescribed time frames and budgets using the most appropriate techniques of discovery and confirmation.

The incumbent may be required to supervise exploration teams comprised of mine and student geologists, geoscientific technologists, technicians as well as outside contractors.

The scope of the position requires motivation and initiative, and the ability to direct and co-ordinate the activity of a team so that it achieves maximum effectiveness.

This position will initially be seconded to the sinking contractor. Once the shaft sinking is completed, the position will be transferred back to KGHM.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under a Secondment During Shaft Sinking,_
  • Plan, direct and participate in geological, drilling and geological testing programs.
  • Perform drafting using AutoCad and other specialised software.
  • Plan, direct and participate in analyses of drill reports, well logs and other test results, maps, notes and cross sections.
  • Carry out geological/geotechnical reports, field inspections and mapping requiring frequent travel underground via a bucket during sinking.
  • Provide QA/QC support for the Rock testing process completed by KGHM.
  • Assess field structural geology and geological features.
  • Identify and advise on anticipated geological risks.
  • Advise and develop methods to mitigate against geological risk.
  • Interface with Operations to ensure compliance to HSE standards.
  • Conduct ground support inspections against the ground control plan and report issues.
  • Ensure geological records systems are developed, implemented and maintained for future reference.
  • Under KGHM During Operations,_
  • Executes mineral exploration programs to explore, locate and define potentially economic mineral deposits within an assigned area, within prescribed timeframes and budgets.
  • Collects, compiles, evaluates and interprets all project geological, geophysical and geochemical data. Prepares short summary reports for the Area Geologist on a weekly and monthly basis.
  • Prepares factual, professional reports of high technical quality, may be asked to present such data to senior management and joint venture partners in a highly professional manner.
  • Logs drill core for geological and geotechnical information.
  • Ensures high quality performance and confidentiality of subordinates' and contractors' work by providing suitable guidance and supervision.
  • Meets realistic deadlines and ensures the completion of the designated exploration program within budgeted guidelines and specified timeframes.
  • Makes recommendations regarding existing or new programs to the Area Geologist.
  • May supervise exploration team(s) comprised of junior and student geologists, geoscientific technologists and technicians as well as outside contractors.
  • Provides oversight of diamond drill programs.
  • Keeps up to date with respect to new geological concepts and the development and use of innovative technology to optimize the effectiveness and efficiency of exploration programs and keeps up to date with provincial regulations.
  • Trains and motivates staff to achieve excellence and to operate in a safe manner.
  • External liaison with on site contractors and suppliers, property owners and their agents, exploration personnel from joint venture partners and other companies, and local government personnel.
  • Accountable for annual operating budgets of up to $500,000.
  • Takes responsibility for aspects of occupational health and safety, and environmental matters, over which the individual has control, including adherence to all requirements applicable to KGHM.
  • Such other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
