About the Role
Driver Safety Specialist

As a
Driver Safety Specialist (DSS) you will be instrumental in promoting driver safety by monitoring for & identifying trends in your assigned fleet, regularly interacting with and observing drivers in the field, making corrective action suggestions to management and assisting in the development of driver training programs.


How You'll Help

  • Conduct regular meetings with all drivers.
  • Investigate and determine root cause & corrective actions as they relate to collisions, driver safety and commercial vehicle operations.
  • Influence company targets by lowering injury rates, accident costs & reducing NSC/CVOR point accumulation.
  • Ensure driver and supervisory personnel adhere to regulatory standards and company policy.
  • Help create safetytraining material to promote driver safety and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Enter driver safety related data and monitor for trends using various software tools.
  • Maintain professional attitude and be a source for solutions and guidance on all driver safety related issues.
  • Participate in on call rotation for accident reporting and driver support.
  • Complete driver field observations during various weather conditions.
  • Be able to communicate to individuals / groups in a classroom and/or virtual setting.
  • Commercial Driver's License is preferred with a clean record.
  • Facilitate LCV permit review training with new operations team members when required
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Your Skills & Experience:


  • Minimum of secondary education, with preference of postsecondary education (general stream), or a combination of education and experience.
  • Previous Transportation or operational experience is preferred, various roles within transportation would be beneficial
  • Class 1 license preferred
  • Communication skills advanced
  • Computer skills accuracy, MS products, AS400, web based programs
  • Knowledge related to legal / safe operation of commercial equipment as to local laws and federal compliance standards.
  • Demonstrated customer relationship skills
  • Knowledge of Transportation of Dangerous goods Regulations
  • Analytical and problem solving skills
  • Effective written and communications skills
  • Attention to detail and high level of accuracy
  • Strong conflict resolution skills
  • Able to meet deadlines in high transactional environment
  • Presentation skills, and working knowledge of adult learning principles
  • Ability to champion business needs in a collaborative manner to colleagues
  • Results focused
  • English is required; fluent in both French and English would be preferred
  • Able to work with little supervision

Working Conditions:


  • Subject to a clear criminal background check prior to employment
  • Must be able to travel freely in Canada for company business as needed.
  • Must be able to work afternoon/ night shifts, every 8 weeks, to be on call for collision reporting & driver support
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
  • Travel may be required around 25% of the time
