    The Division of Student Affairs (STUA) is made up of four departments with 26 reporting units that work together to help create an environment where our students are actively engaged in their academic pursuits and the co-curricular life of the university. From Food Services to Academic Advising, each of the units of Student Affairs exists to help UVic students succeed. This new position works across the STUA portfolio and is housed within Student Development and Success (SDAS), which focuses on the development and implementation of strategic student support models, co-curricular engagement programming, and serving as a key resource for both the Division of Student Affairs and campus leaders as it relates to student retention and satisfaction planning and initiatives. SDAS also focuses on the establishment of a new professional development program available to all staff across the Division.

    The International Centre for Students (ICS), a unit within the Department of Student Services, is a centralized resource which provides services, information and supports for all international students including degree-seeking, incoming and outgoing exchange students, visiting and visiting research students.

    The ICS plays a key role in supporting and contributing to the retention and success of international students.

    The salary range for this position is:

    Recruitment range: $63,941- $70,492 starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.

    Performance range: starting salary to max of $83,138 is available through annual performance increases.

    Job Summary

    The Global Community Adviser (GCA) reports to the Associate Director. This position will research, design, develop and coordinate socio-cultural and academic programs that support the transition, integration and academic success of international students (e g., international degree program and short-term incoming exchange and visiting students). This role applies Council for Advancement of Standards (CAS Standards) and contemporary student development theory to build innovative curriculum for student programs and initiatives that support the success of students participating in the internationalization of the University of Victoria.

    The GCA engages and connects international and domestic students to build a supportive and inclusive student community. The GCA leads key academic support programs, including: the Global Community Mentorship Program, the Global Community Conversation Partners Program, and Orientation and Transitions Program The GCA supervises paraprofessional and student volunteers, including volunteer mentors and conversation partners. In addition to providing services, the GCA is responsible for a medium-sized portfolio of international programming-related administration. The GCA responds to a broad range of queries from international students, parents, faculty, and staff, including telephone and email advising inquiries.

    As a result of the nature of the duties and responsibilities of this position, evening and weekend work may be required.

    Job Requirements

    This position requires a level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree plus 3 years of related International Education experience. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

  • Related experience creating a virtual presence using websites, social media and online tools.
  • Delivering workshops, programs, presentations and organizing major events and/or programs within a higher education environment.
  • Proven expertise in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrated administrative and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with the ISC and UVic programs, policies, procedures, and business systems is considered an asset.
