Job Description Summary


Positions in this classification design, install, program, verify, diagnose, repair and maintain the functionality of Electronic Security Systems for the University, including Access Control, Intrusion Alarms, CCTV, and their successful integration to related UBC Systems infrastructure including IP networks, phone lines, and Electrified Door Hardware.

Organizational Status

Reports directly to the Manager of Secure Access, Campus Security.

Work Performed


Installs, programs, verifies and maintains function of Electronic Security Systems, including all devices and components required for the successful operation of Enterprise-level Access Control, Intrusion Alarms, CCTV Systems, dependent 12/24 volt cabling and power supplies, and integration to related Systems.


Assists with the installation, programming, verification and maintenance of Systems related infrastructure including networked computer hardware and software, monitored response communications equipment, and electrified door hardware power supplies c/w relay control circuitry.

Assists with providing successful communication and connectivity with IP networks for Electronic Security Systems.

Responds, investigates, diagnoses and repairs Electronic Security Systems, including integration to related Systems.

Responds to emergency service calls, both during and outside normal working hours.

Designs Electronic Security solutions and prepares estimates.

Performs scheduled and service-response inspections of Systems as required to evaluate and verify adherence to accepted performance levels.

Recommends and maintains Systems supplies (shop materials) for Secure Access department.

Provides technical expertise, technical documentation and user training on Systems operation to University faculty/staff.

Provides accurate and complete documentation of Systems installation layout to appropriate staff.

Maintains working knowledge of all technical aspects of campus Electronic Security Systems.

Ensures work is performed in compliance with UBC Technical Guidelines & Standards and Provincial Electrical Codes/Regulations.


Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Consequence of Error/Judgement


Determines how best to complete installation, repair and design work based on technical knowledge of the field, industry standards and related departmental guidelines and policies; inappropriate decisions could result in Systems malfunction causing the loss of valuable equipment and data, interruption in the operation of University departments, delay and increased costs.

Minimum Qualifications


A trade qualification for Security Systems Technician, valid or eligible for Security Worker License, valid BC driver's license and a minimum five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications


Trade qualification for Security Systems Technician, Trade Certification for Security Alarm Installer, Valid or Eligible for Security Worker License, Valid BC Drivers Licence.

Minimum of five years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment. Experience with large institutional and commercial system preferred. Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities. Ability to plan, execute, and complete assigned tasks effectively. Ability to deal with a diversity of people in a calm, courteous, and effective manner. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with co-workers and campus community members.
