The Business Liaison focuses on delivery of strategic initiatives related to business support, program administration, research and reporting that catalyze economic opportunities and support Edmonton's business community.

This work supports the Business Friendly Edmonton framework - a business retention, expansion and investment attraction strategy - and the advocacy for interfaces and processes that create a more business-friendly City.


The Business Liaison will directly and indirectly support entrepreneurs and businesses, especially those with an innovative product or service that could be advanced by working with the City and partner organizations.

This involves aiding local businesses and those considering locating in Edmonton with navigating the City regulatory framework and other requirements for successful business start up, operation, expansion and relocation.

With a focus on the City of Edmonton's Cultural Commitments to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:

  • Support a portfolio of entrepreneur and small to medium-sized business clients to support their needs to start, grow and invest in Edmonton
  • Provide an advisory role to committees and teams on new innovation programs,and opportunities for the City to be the 'first client' to Edmontonbased startups (City as a lab)
  • Respond to inquiries relating to all business types, and specifically innovative business plans that may benefit from working with City Administration or assets to validate or scale
  • Help business owners understand and navigate relevant regulatory processes
  • Respond to business development trends and negotiate with internal and external stakeholders to align commercial strategies and advocate for process innovation
  • Produce and maintain web content and materials related to business supports
  • Conduct regular information collection, research, jurisdictional scans, and reporting to support Business Friendly Edmonton initiatives and the advancement of the Economic Action Plan
  • Identify reliable, accessible sources of information to ensure a consistent source of data for decision making, including repositories of information that support program and client service delivery
  • Support the operating decisions of the Local Economy and Investment Services section by conducting economic and community development research
  • Ensure a GBA+ lens is applied to all section strategy, policy and research activities
  • Aid in the delivery of economic development grants and vibrancy projects
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications:


  • Degree in business, economics, political science, public administration or a related field
  • 2 or more years of related work experience
  • Experience working in a municipal government setting or public administration or a corporation working directly with leadership on strategic business planning and implementation is considered an asset
  • Certification in change management, project management or strategic planning is an asset
  • Knowledge and demonstrated skills in the areas of project management, change management, performance measurement, research, business case development, strategic and business planning
  • Demonstrated experience in the public and/or private sector to understand complex economic development issues and gaps and the ability to implement actions to resolve them is an asset
  • Direct experience helping to support the growth, vibrancy, and innovation of businesses
  • Knowledge of municipal, provincial and federal economic development policies and strategies
  • Knowledge of policy development and practices and their potential economic impact is an asset
  • Knowledge of or training in equity, antiracism, Indigenous awareness, and GBA+ would be considered an asset
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment
  • Demonstrated ability to respond with flexibility to demands and expedite tasks and assignments
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external customers; excellent interpersonal and customer service skills are required
  • Proven research skills that demonstrate the ability to screen information, distill relevant data, and produce and clearly articulate (written and verbal) analysis to formulate strategy, policy, and actions
