Position Summary:
Reporting to the Media Relations Associate Director, the Media Relations Officer promotes a positive image of the University. Ensure clear, consistent, and accurate exchange of information with external communities. Write and develop communications materials for various audiences on various topics.

Collaborate with researchers and key stakeholders to secure the university's position as a research-intensive global leader. Develop press releases, research briefs and collateral materials in support of the Mission of the University at large.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conceive, write and edit materials for external communications in accordance with the University's research intensity to secure consistent earned media coverage.
  • Select, conduct and summarize interviews with researchers and administrators, for multiplatform use to promote the impact of the university locally, nationally and globally
  • Regularly collaborate with colleagues including faculty to keep current of news and emerging issues
  • Plan and implement media relations strategies in collaboration with members of the Institutional Communications team
  • Develop and maintain strong contacts with journalists; respond to enquiries in a timely manner.
  • Provide media training for McGill staff, students and faculty
  • Help boost and track McGill's impact (key performance indicators) in select areas including research, institutional news, and progress on critical dossiers by researching and providing advice about best practices, gaps, and opportunities.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

3 years experience in communications or journalism, with an understanding of the news media landscape. Excellent writing skills. Proficiency in both French and English. Thrives in a team environment. Exceptional interpersonal skills and diplomacy. Proven developed sense of priority and urgency. Ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines on multiple dossiers, in a context of changing priorities. Knowledge of commonly used software and technical tools.
