  • The Sonshine Centre is a residential shelter serving women and children fleeing family violence and abuse. The Centre is an integral part of Calgary's collaborative response to domestic violence, housing women with and without children who are at a high risk for serious injury or fatality.
  • The Children's Centre is the first licensed fulltime children's Centre of its kind in Canada. It meets the unique needs of children who have experienced domestic violence or other forms of emotional trauma.
  • Sonshine Community Counselling exists to support individuals to build health within families and relationships. We offer ethical, clientcentered and trustworthy counselling to community members, with the intent of removing barriers to access to professional counselling.
  • Sonshine Family Day Homes provides homebased childcare throughout the city of Calgary. Our homebased programs are inclusive, regulated, safe and caring.
We are seeking a dynamic individual to fill the position of Parent-Child Educator. The person who will fill this role is passionate about families, self-motivated, strength-based, organized and a creative thinker. You enjoy a combination of team and independent work and have the ability to build and maintain healthy relationships. You are a highly organized individual with effective interpersonal communication skills.


Purpose of the Position:

The position is full-time, working 35 hours per week, Monday-Friday. This position qualifies for health benefits and the salary will be commensurate with experience


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Administer and evaluate various pre and post assessments (both child and family)
  • Implementation of parent demonstration and feedback sessions
  • Developing individual Theraplay programs for each family and program
  • Directing the Theraplay sessions for parents and children and in the children's programs
  • Completing all assessments and information gathering required by the position
  • Completing all the tracking tools, case notes and data tracking required by this position
  • Deliver Group Theraplay to the children in both the Children's Centre and Residential Children's Program
  • Complete Family and Child Support/Program Plans
  • Work in partnership with counsellors, child support workers and family support workers

Qualifications and Skills:


  • Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, Child and Youth Care, or related field required.
  • Level One Theraplay and Marschak Interaction Method (MIM) certification from The Theraplay Institute an asset.
  • 3+ years of experience in a related field.
  • Introductory Group Theraplay an asset.
  • Experience working with family violence, trauma, addictions, and mental illness.
  • Previous nonprofit organization experience considered an asset.
  • In depth knowledge regarding childhood trauma and toxic stress and intervention methods needed to diminish the impact of this trauma on development.
  • Affinity for working with children and families.
  • Knowledge about Adverse Childhood Experiences
  • ACEs.
  • Ability to adapt and be flexible in a dynamic environment.
  • Exceptional problemsolving skills, effective interpersonal skills and relationship building skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate respectfully at all levels.
  • Critical & reflective thinker as well as an active listener.
  • Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills.
  • Effective time and task management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, particularly around sensitive issues and situations impacting clients.
  • Computer literacy, including effective working skills of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint required.

Requirements:


  • Current Police Information Check including vulnerable sector search and current Child Intervention Record Check (completed within the last 6 months)
  • Current First Aid and CPR
  • Must be able to provide 2 professional references
  • Ability to work one evening (until 8:00pm) per week if required
