Job description

We are a small (2 lawyers, 5–7 staff), established law firm located in Ladysmith, British Columbia, seeking a capable and conscientious Legal Assistant or Paralegal to join our team. The lawyer seeking assistance has a busy practice focused primarily on estate planning and estate administration, together with a limited volume of routine corporate and small business matters.

This position is presently focused on supporting the estate planning side of his practice and will involve the preparation of draft estate and incapacity planning documents using firm precedents and the responsible lawyer's notes and instructions.

The successful candidate will join an office environment where careful work, reliability, and professionalism are highly valued.

Duties will include, among other things:

  • drafting estate planning and incapacity planning documents, including Wills, Powers of Attorney, and Representation Agreements, using established firm precedents
  • preparing reporting letters, correspondence, and related file documentation
  • assisting with the organization, management, and progression of client files from opening through completion
  • reviewing documents for accuracy, completeness, and consistency
  • communicating professionally with clients and third parties as required
  • assisting with scheduling meetings and document execution appointments
  • maintaining accurate and orderly electronic and physical file records
  • providing general legal and administrative support as required

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Legal Assistant or Paralegal certificate or diploma, or equivalent practical experience
  • prior experience working in a law firm environment
  • experience with estate planning and estate administration matters is strongly preferred
  • excellent drafting, proofreading, and organizational skills
  • careful attention to detail and a high standard of accuracy
  • professional communication skills, both written and verbal
  • ability to work independently and manage responsibilities efficiently
  • proficiency with Microsoft Word and standard office software
  • experience with Appara

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $50,000.00-$65,000.00 per year
