If so, then this role, as CONSULTANT - District Energy Systems (DES) Advisory with Urban Equation, a dynamic, boutique real estate advisory practice, may be for you.


Reporting to the Director in Toronto, you will be responsible for supporting and delivering our DES services and advisory practice across North America.

What are the deliverables?

  • Deliver bestinclass DES services and issue deliverables for existing and new DES clients, for example:
  • DES and/or allied renewable energy (geothermal, solar etc,) Concept Studies
  • DES and/or allied renewable energy (geothermal, solar etc,) Financial Feasibility Studies
  • DES and/or allied renewable energy (geothermal, solar etc,) Strategy Advisory
  • Organize and conduct internal and external project meetings to conduct workshops, complete tasks and progress projects as per project workplans
  • Contributed to knowledge sharing for our DES and renewables service line
  • Write and issue RFPs/RFQs and develop presentation materials as needed

Qualifications and Experience

  • Mechanical, industrial, architectural or electrical engineering
  • A professional designation such as P.Eng, CEM, PMP
  • 46 years of relevant experience and proven industry knowledge in buildingside mechanical engineering, consulting, district energy
  • Expertise in energyefficient and lowcarbon technologies and strategies for residential, commercial, industrial and mixeduse buildings and communities
  • Applied knowledge of DES business fundamentals and consulting experience.
  • Played a leading technical or project management role on projects
  • Detailed energy modeling and integrated design processes
  • Experience with financial modeling for buildings, DES, utilities and/or utility energy assets
  • Experience with detailed energy modeling and integrated design processes.
  • Identify and quantify optimal energy sources especially renewables like geothermal/geoexchange, waste heat recovery, sewer heat recovery, air source heat pumps, high efficiency heat recovery chillers, thermal and electrical energy storage
  • Develop and evaluate energy sources (including plant locations, building connection requirements), district energy concepts, systems and strategies,
  • Basebuilding mechanical engineering expertise especially in HVAC systems
  • Working knowledge of building codes and standards such as ASHRAE, OBC, GAGBC ZCB, Toronto green standards (TGS)
  • Basic understanding of sustainability frameworks such as LEED
  • RFPs/RFQs: Vet and respond to RFPs; ability to comprehend requirements and write project scopes; detailed proposal writing
  • Strong analytical, mechanical and/or electrical and problemsolving skills
  • Technical report writing and presentation development ability

Project Management and Business Skills

  • Ability to manage complex, multidisciplinary energy/engineering projects independently or as directed prepare and follow project workplans, support meetings (preparing meeting minutes, agendas, notes, documentation)
  • Deliver scopes within budget and as per schedule and integrate into project master schedules
  • Identify critical path items, precursors and successors and coordinate inputs and outputs with other stakeholders in a timely manner
  • Manage invoicing schedules and reporting for invoice preparation and internal accounting
  • Resource planning for task completion and updating projections of team members with a view to identify capacities and bottlenecks
  • Develop cash flow projections capturing capex, opex, replacements costs
  • Understand and quantify multiple perspectives for measuring financial impacts to developers, tenants and condo boards
  • Understanding of real estate development, proformas and financials
  • Carry out financial feasibility studies of developed DES concepts
  • Ability to inform DES strategy for developers, public
