The Conservation Technician supports the Land Department in the ongoing restoration of naturalized ecosystems at the Ignatius Jesuit Centre.
They will take part in the regular maintenance of trails, plan and implement restoration projects, and will be part of the IJC snow removal team.
They will lead seasonal staff as required.The Ignatius Jesuit Centre (IJC) is a 640-acre private property with public access situated just beyond the northern edge of the City of Guelph.
The Centre is home to a world-class retreat house, organic farm, and a conservation property called the Old-Growth Forest Project.
The Land Department supports IJC's vision of cultivating spiritual growth and ecological engagement through work with the natural spaces on the main property and Old-Growth Forest Project.
It is the Land Department's goal, with the help of local community and volunteers, to restore and protect these diverse ecological communities and to assist in their regeneration.
KEY ACTIVITIES
- Invasive species management and removal
- Maintain trails & boardwalks
- Maintain native woody and herbaceous plantings
- Tree care; mulching, watering, pruning, and removal
- Cold-water stream restoration
- Responsible for snow removal on property, including plowing, salting, shoveling
- Lead Conservation seasonal staff, volunteers, and interested parties in restoration activities
- Respond to outreach or conservation inquiries and liaise with conservation partners
- Plan and coordinate daily tasks
- Operate, and perform minor repairs on, the department's tools and machinery
- Collaborate with other departments at IJC
EXPERIENCE
- Work
- Experience maintaining trailways
- Strong leadership, communication, ability to take initiative
- Experience operating power tools and machinery, including mowers, tractors, chainsaw, and pole saw
- Willing and able to do physically demanding work in varied weather conditions, including regularly lifting up to 50kgs
- Valid 'G' Class Driver's License
- Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends
- Chainsaw experience and certification an asset
- First Aid/CPR, and Pesticide Applicator (Forestry) certification an asset
