The Office of Capacity Management (OCM) at LHSC is a large integrated portfolio that includes all LHSC beds, bed management, patient access and flow, surgical peri-operative services and centralized staffing teams.

Charged with optimizing surgical volumes and patient flow in support of patient access, the OCM is a broad corporate portfolio that reached across multiple levels of LHSC.


Job Summary:

The Capacity Manager role is a key enabler to standardized and centralized capacity management and patient flow throughout LHSC.

Through a collaborative model, the manager will work closely with clinical unit staff to assign beds, discharge/ repatriate/transfer patients and minimize delays.

A data-driven mindset and approach will support the success of this new leadership role.

These roles have 24/7 functionality in the organization. The role responsibilities include bed management; responding to capacity/patient flow issues; and managing regional patient flow.

After hours, the Capacity Manager will assist with disclosure and family issues; assist with staff and patient safety issues; and assist with any unanticipated operational issue.


Reporting to the Senior Manager, Patient Access and Flow, the Capacity Manager directs, controls and evaluates the delivery of department services.

As a key decision maker, they are responsible for translating decisions of the program leadership into execution, by utilizing relationship management and working with internal and external stakeholders to achieve the necessary outcomes.

The Manager ensures the team and department operations are aligned with our mission, vision and values, while working together to successfully achieve our strategic objectives.


This role is accountable for day-to-day department activities, including the development and support of a healthy workplace, risk and utilization measurements, and facilitation of improvement initiatives and change management, while operating within approved operational budgets and financial guidelines and controls.

What Skills Are Needed

  • Expert technical skills in utilizing bedmanagement systems to assign beds and manage flow; experience with Capacity Management and First Net preferred

What You Will Bring with You
